Newbie here with some newbish questions!!

Post by SunshineKB » Thu Feb 25, 2010 12:21 pm

I've been "lurking" for a few days now and have learned a lot about HOD! My son is currently in Kindergarten, but we will start homeschooling in August. I am almost positive that I want to use HOD based on everything I have read and heard. Seems to be right down my alley in terms of what I'm looking for!! I'm so excited! :D

I am super confused, though, when I look at the online store. My son will be 1st grade, so "Beyond", right? I'm not seeing any full curriculum sets. Are they all individualized? And if so, I'm not sure what to get since there are an overwhelming number of options with everything it seems! Since it's my first year, I would feel much more comfortable doing an entire curriculum "set" so to speak, while I get my feet wet. Is there anyone who can help me make some sense of things? Thanks so much!!!!

Hi,
Welcome to the boards! I believe if you click on the particular guide you are interested in on the home page, it takes you to more info on that guide. And then, there will be a link to click on packages for that guide near the top. And as far as determining which guide to use next year, you'd want to check the placement chart. I'm sure Carrie or Julie will be able to give you more info, but that can get you started!

Hello! I'm currently using Little Hearts for His Glory with my 1st grader. We love it. Feel free to PM me should you have any questions about using this program for a 1st grader. Enjoy exploring your options.

Welcome! It can be confusing at first. On the home page there is a link for the placement charts. There is more than one link and you will want to take a look at both. When you click on a guide from the homepage you can click on the package link and it will show you all of the materials used. Little Hearts for His Glory actually has both kindergarten and 1st grade choices for math, writing, and science. You can also choose from two reading programs. Another thing I found very helpful was clicking on the link that shows a full week's schedule from the guide. That might help you make your final decision as to where you son would best fit (Little Hearts or Beyond). Feel free to ask more questions and I am sure some of the other ladies will chime in.

Hello!! :D I'd just like to say welcome! God is so good at leading people to HOD & I know you won't be disappointed! :D
As others have mentioned -you can use either Little Hearts for His Glory (LHFHG) or Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory (BLHFHG) for a First grader- but you definitely want to check the placement chart to see where your son would fit best. Also, the store lists a lot of things seperately (in case you don't want a package deal)- it is at least a little less confusing to click on the actual program & the "Packages" section (as Busymomma1 said) in order to more easily see what exactly you will need! :D
Have a great day!

HI there, and welcome to the HOD board! I'm so excited for you to begin homeschooling with HOD - you have so many fun days ahead of you! Don't worry about anything, we'll help you will any questions you may have until you have everything set to go for your year with HOD. The best place to start is the placement chart. It is short and easy to use, and it's always helped me accurately place my dc in HOD. When looking at the placement chart, it's most helpful to put the most emphasis on the first page of it. If you could share just a tad about your child's reading, writing, and math (using the placement chart as a guide), we'll all help you decide just what to order. Here's a link to the chart:

If you have any questions about it, be sure to ask! Just pop back on here with a bit of info about those areas, and we'll help you fine tune things! :D We all look forward to getting to know you here, and I'm so glad you have found HOD! :D

In Christ,
Julie

Thank you all SO much for all your help already! I had already looked at the placement chart, just forgot to bring that up *blush* lol. My son would definitely be suited for Beyond. He's an advanced reader for his age. I feel so silly now not just looking at the main page haha! I just read about the program in general, then went straight to the store to check out packages and pricing. I am about to go explore the content that was suggested. Again, thank you so much!! You all are making me feel welcome, and that really means a lot to me! :)

Well, Beyond it is then! :D I just finished Beyond a few weeks ago - you are going to have a blast doing Beyond with your child! As far as what to order, here's the rundown...
*you need the Economy Package
*pick 1 of these for reading (1 of the phonics, the Emerging Reader's Set, OR Drawn into the Heart of Reading Level 2/3)
*pick 1 of the Basic packages (this depends on the math level you want, if you want first grade math, pick the one with 1A/1B; if you want the second grade math, pick the one with 2A/2B)
*choose 1 deluxe package of read-alouds (Classic, Boy, OR Girl set), OR put together your own set of genre-based read-alouds

HTH - and I think you'll love Beyond! :D
