phonics / reading placement ?
My daughter is coming up on 5 yrs old and is sounding out cvc and most ccvc, cvcc words. (We've just been using phonics books to teach her) We need to work on sight words and all those rule breaking words. Any suggestions for a a program or a way to teach those items?

I cannot say enough good things about about Reading Made Easy. Of course since you have already started phonics I do not know how much of a repeat it will be, but my 5 yr old son has done very well with RME.
It covers phonics, sight wortds and the way it presents the soft and hard sounds of vowels, silents letters, etc. has been very easy him to grasp.

You can always start in the middle of Reading Made Easy too. It also has an optional accompanying CD, if your child enjoys learning that way, too. Reading Made Easy goes quite far in phonics teaching - I'd say to maybe beginning of an average Gr. 2 reader or so. So, that may be a good option!

Thanks. I didn't realize there was more to those books than the simple learning to sound out cvc words and letters. I'll have to take a closer look at them.
Any other thoughts?

crlacey,
Both Reading Made Easy and The Reading Lesson are complete phonics programs in that they take your kiddos from beginning readers to beginning second grade reading level.
Once the programs are finished, kiddos can read real books to continue becoming more independent as readers. We have an Emerging Reader Set scheduled to fit that purpose in both "Beyond..." and "Bigger...". Then, the continued phonics instruction switches over to being a spelling emphasis in our guides.
If your daughter has already had some phonics instruction, you may want to look at The Reading Lesson. It is easier to jump into in the middle (if needed) than most programs because it doesn't use such a special coding system for sounds in words.
Hope that helps!
Blessings,
Carrie
