Shaking things up

Post by mskogen » Sat Jan 30, 2010 7:46 am

To begin we just found out we are expecting our 5th child this September :D One would think I would be trying to think of ways to make my life easier. However after much prayer and talking to hubby and kids, I have decided to spilt up my oldest two. They have been combined for as long as the second one has been in school. They are spilt for math, grammar and health. We are on week 20 of Bigger. My plan is to continue at full speed with my ds 9 and my ds 7 (soon to be 8) I will take to half speed.
I think this is necessary for my ds 7. He has been doing the work fine. But I really feel if I slow it down he will get more out of it. And we can focus on some other areas that are not his strong suit. His handwriting is ok when he tries but I really feel if I slow things down we could improve on it. I also am not sure he will be ready for Preparing full speed come July. (My ds 9 is already ready for it so I don't want to do it half speed with him) I know this means I will be working from one manual for awhile just in two seperate spots. Probably not recommended but I don't really want to just stop Bigger with oldest and start Preparing (unless this is what is recommended :?: . I have seen real growth in him this year. We looked over Preparing yesterday and he is excited to start the research. I have a few questions about doing this....would it be ok to let my oldest ds, who is a very capable reader, read the history and science on his own? This would greatly save me time :!: He loves to learn independently. I let him read his health to himself and then we discuss it. This is what I was thinking I would do now. I would greatly apperciate any suggestions. Thanks everyone, expecially Carrie and Julie for encouraging me daily.
Blessings,
Michelle

Congratulations, Michelle! :D I think it sounds like a wise idea to slow it down for your 7 yo, and he can also slow down PHFHG after that, while instead your older could keep going full-speed with it all. Putting some distance between the 2 will also, over time, balance your teaching time between them nicely. For now, yes, I do think it would be just fine for your older ds to do the history/science readings on his own, just be sure to do the follow-up things with him, as that will become important teaching time especially then. You will probably want to do phonics/reading (whichever 7 yo is doing) daily though, even slowed down, as this is one area that it seems to be important to teach daily for real progress to continue to be made. You are wise to step back and consider what's best for each of your dc as new stages of learning emerge. I think this will be a good change from what you've shared, and I have prayed for your pregnancy to go well! :D

Julie

Thanks Julie, I was planning to do Preparing half speed too (at least in the beginning till he hits his stride  ) He , ds 7, has finished phonics and Emergent Reader set. We started DITHOR a few months back. We do that as a group with older ds. We do this 3 days a week. Seems to be working fine at this rate.
I am glad you said it would be ok for older ds to read on his own. I will do the activities and have him narrate to me daily. This is how he prefers to do school. Read independently and discuss it. He is very independent and loves challenges. When I showed him Preparing he got very excited about the research section but told him he would have to wait. He then asked if I would assign him research now :!: I will have to see what I can come up with.
Thanks again for the suggestions!
Blessings,
Michelle

mskogen,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! :D It sounds like you have a great plan in place and one that takes into account the changing needs of your kiddos, yet makes the most of where you are at right now. I'll just link this previous post of mine (about using Bigger Hearts more indpendently). It may be of help to you too, and assure you that you're on a great path. :D Link: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4632

Blessings,
Carrie
