Storytime in BLHFHG

I can't seem to get enough reading in with storytime to actually finish a book in the 4 weeks, even if I read at bedtime and over the weekend. Of course that depends on the book, but so far it's been with two books.. Trumpet of the Swan and Ginger Pye. We read a couple of pages during school time and then read some more at night as they go to sleep, but it apparently isn't enough. DD1 absolutely will not let me read school books to her at other times (in other words, if it's mentioned during school) except the Bible, and she won't read it either (although she could). So could I just skip ahead, tell her what's happened and let her hear the ending? or not? What would you suggest? is there something I'm missing?

I had the same "trouble" with Ginger Pye so I got it on audio CD from the library I also let DD read ahead some since that was a really long book, and I'd pick up where she left off. I'd play the CD during lunch and snacks, and sometimes during rest times.

I just divide a book's total pages by 20, since there are 20 days of reading, and read that amount each day. There have been seasons in my life when I love to read a bunch, and seasons where I need to read just a little. If you're in a season where you have time for just a little, I'd just always choose the book with the least amount of pages.

I do what Julie does, and I write in my weekly planner what actual pages I'm reading each day. It keeps me on track and helps me to say "no" when my daughter is begging for more! I actually just finished reading Ginger Pye, it was a little difficult to read, because of all the tangents and the length of the book. But because I had the pages already in my planner it was hard to wimp out and not read all the pages necessary (even though I really wanted to just put the book away!). That was one book that will probably not be in rotation when I go through Beyond with my son. HTH!

I agree with the ladies' wise advice that it's important to know what season you're in for reading aloud and choose books accordingly. So, if you're having a tough time finishing the longer books from the Classic Pack, I would down shift to shorter books from the Girl or Boy Interest Set instead. With my oldest son, I read longer books (as I had more time then)! With my next kiddso in line we've done more of the shorter books with shorter chapters as read-alouds, as I've needed shorter books in order for me to get the reading aloud in!

So, you'll know best what fits your time frame and your daughter's listening level. I wouldn't recommend fast forwarding to the end of a book though, as you'll miss much of the plot.

The reason I said that about fast forwarding is because we've read Ginger Pye before Just not trying to finish in 20 days!

I'm going to have to get a different mystery book for when DD2 reaches Beyond... it's just too long for the amount of reading for them. I just didn't want to get a new mystery book for 10 days of plans
