My 9 y.o. LOVES the creative writing assignments in Preparing, especially the poetry ones. Today (Unit eight) was supposed to be a desert paragraph, but she asked to write a poem instead. I said,"OK", and she wrote this entirely by herself. I love how we enjoy all of HOD, but in particular how there are different subjects that really draw out the individual interests of each child.
Danger in the Desert
The kingsnake slithers over the hot, dry ground,
It moves but doesn’t make a sound.
It looks for prey to strike and kill,
But it has to pause a moment, still.
At night the Gila monster looks
For something tasty, soft and good.
A rat, a mouse, a little snake,
It’s just as good as a piece of cake.
