Reading

My son and I are working through Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. We are about halfway through, so I anticipate we will finish this book as we finish the LHFHG in May. Which phonics program would I head to next? How do you determine whether your child is a beginning reader or emerging readers?

Never mind. It looks like I would go with the emerging reader program to build his confidence in reading or if he is really doing well and reading independently I would go with the DITHOR. So now I have another question about the reading packs. Do you need to get books from the deluxe set (or at the library) to go with the BLHFHG AND do the books in the emerging reader bracket, or is it one or the other?

OK. Got the answer to that question, too. Looks like we need both sets, one for the reading section that he would read to me and one for the storytime section that I would read to him. Sorry. Having some confusion switching between computer screens!

My oldest is working through 100 EZ too. She should be finished up when we end school in May if not before. I was going to have her read the books listed in the back of 100 EZ over the summer plus some other easy readers. I was going to have her count the books she reads herself for our local library's summer reading program as extra incentive.

We'll be doing the emergent reader's set this fall too. Looking forward to it!

BTW - Book-It has a program for homeschoolers that you signup for in the fall I think so that can be another fun incentive.

I don't think we would have been ready for the Emergent Readers right after 100 EZ. We went to a couple of Dick and Jane Readers and the Rod and Staff First Steps and onto Days Go By. She was a pretty confident reader after that and then the Emergents were just right.

Hope this helps!
