Gentle Ben

Post by Daisy » Mon Nov 02, 2009 9:33 pm

My daughter just finished reading Gentle Ben. She loved it soooo much. Can any of you recommend a similar book? She wants MORE. LOL. She is just like we all are and sad to see the end of such a great book.

We loved Gentle Ben! It was nothing like the tv show Gentle Ben that I loved as a kid though.

This is a picture book but have you read The Biggest Bear? We like that a lot.

What about My Side of the Mountain?

Are you looking for an outdoorsy type book?

She loves animals and adventure. She's a 5th grader so it needs to be a bit higher level.

She's read My Side of the Mountain, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Black Beauty, etc.

Maybe the Walter Farley books (Black Stallion)? Does anyone know what reading level they are?

This site doesn't have every book, but has reading levels for many, many books (as well as specific reviews on content, objectionable elements, etc.)

http://www.factsonfiction.org/content/d ... eport.aspx

For example, Black Beauty is listed at a reading level of 3.8. My Side of the Mountain is listed as 5.2.

How about babies and adventure? Baby Island is a big hit in our house these days.

My son loved Gentle Ben as well. :D
My kids favorite book of all time is Mocassin Trail. It is not a lot like Gentle Ben but an outdoorsy type of book too. They just loved that book and were so sad when it ended.

I LOVED the Black Stallion series when I was younger. I have all of them! And have re-read some.

My ds loved all of the Marguerite Henry books. The Misty Series is wonderful! We also have quite a few of the Black Stallion books, but they are a bit harder than the Marguerite Henry books, so we set them aside for him to try again later. He's in fourth grade this year. The Max Elliot Anderson books are outstanding as well. I'm so glad your dd enjoyed Gentle Ben! It's so exciting to find what books really inspire our dc - it's like a little window into their minds. :D

Daisy,

I completely agree that Gentle Ben is an absolute treasure! I'm so glad that your daughter loved it. I loved it too! :D If your daughter hasn't already read Rascal by Sterling North, she may wish to read that one. It is a similar plot to Gentle Ben, only the main characters are raccoons.

A humorous animal book about keeping owls is Owls in the Family by Farley Mowat. That would give a different feel, but is a lighter-hearted, thoroughly enjoyable book as well. :D

Happy reading!

Blessings,
Carrie

Oh, yes! I have Rascal as a planned read-aloud for my son. I'll pull it out for her.

She's currently almost finished with Black Stallion and loving it. It was her Dad's favorite series growing up so they are sharing some sweet moments together over the plot.
