Reading comprehension??

What can I do to help my ds (3rd grade) with this? He cannot seem to remember hardly anything of what I read to him in order to narrate. Also when he has questions at the end of something he is reading, he has a difficult time finding the answers in the text unless they are totally spelled out for him and easy to find.

My dd1 has the same problem it's what has been holding her back. Just last night my Father sent me this link.
I'm going to try it with my kid. On her reading comprehension packet. I dunno if it will work but I think its worth a try.

Also My DD1's therapist recommended books on tape. She is supposed to listen for enjoyment only 2-3 times a day. Doing just that over the summer raised her reading comp a grade level. And now she is telling me about them.

here are some free story links we like story nory's narrator. But the other one has some fun stories too preview all stories for content first!!! Many are Fairy tales. Story home has fictional tails about George Washington ALWAYS a favorite with my dd

Oh, I know that this can be frustrating! I do think bit by bit all dc improve their narrating skills, but we sure would love to fast forward through some of those more trying times, wouldn't we? I was thinking that this was a concern you'd mentioned awhile back, and I knew there had been some good dialogue about it. Not surprisingly, reading comprehension is high on our list of concerns as homeschool moms, so others of us have been through or are going through the same thing. Here are a few past links about this discussion - I wondered if you've had the opportunity to try some of these suggestions and if any of them seemed to make a difference?

I know how hard this can be. It is super frustrating to work on this, but I also know big growth can take place with just implementing a few changes a little at a time. I will pray for clarity about what may most help your ds, but I am confident he can improve his narrating skills and along with that his comprehension with time. I agree with Tansy that listening to audio books and following along in the book as they listen is an excellent way to build reading comprehension. We try for around 15 minutes a day or so, and Blackstone Audio, as well as Amazon, have an excellent selection of audio books.

I'm not sure how to advise you to increase his comprehension from your read alouds. However, after a year of reading A LOT of books on her own, silently, my daughter's reading comprehension level jumped a couple of grade levels. I was really surprised, and pleasantly so! It may be something you could try, along with whatever other tips you get from the wise ladies here.

Ironically, Inhistiming, I was reading these research results from some reading study online and they said that reading silently increases comprehension over having a dc read a book aloud. Interesting!
