Singapore 3A word problems

Post by deltagal » Thu Oct 29, 2009 5:23 am

Hello everyone,

My oh so slow to understand 10 1/2 yo son is really having a hard time with the word problems in Singapore 3A and I honestly don't know how to coach him through it. He has always had difficulty understanding. But I'll spare you the details. The problems he's currently having trouble with require 2 steps - i.e, "Sakrit spent $240 on Monday, Seth spent $40 more than Sakrit on Tuesday. How much did they spend altogether?" Any advice on how to help him?

I would appreciate it!

Hi Florence! How's it going? :D When my ds struggled with word problems in 3A, I drew a bar like they do in Singapore to show him what to do. So, I'd draw a rectangular bar divided in 2 parts, and have $240 written in the first section and $40 written in the next section. This helped him to visually see it better and know what he had to do. He's nearing the end of 3B now and is drawing the bars himself from time to time if he's stuck. HTH! :D

Hi Julie,

Thanks for your reply. I'm just understanding more and more that we really have to play with manipulatives and talk it through A LOT for him to get the feel of it. The bar graphs aren't working for him, yet. But hopefully, as he gains confidence we'll be able to rely on those more. I've had him working in the Singapore 1A word problem book to boost confidence and today he said he thought he was ready for something more challenging.

Regarding - how's it going. It is going well. One of the many blessings of HOD is that you have a plan to keep you on track when you can't plan. Since we started HOD in January of this year we've moved 3 times, I started a part-time job and I'm now 20 weeks in to a pregnancy at the tender age of 44. I haven't been able to post much, because ....need I explain. But I've just recently started to tune back into the board and am looking forward to sharing in everyone's wisdom.

Oh my, Florence! You have had a lot going on! Moving can be so stressful, as well as adding a part-time job - and expecting too?!? The Lord surely has some important plans for your new little one on the way. Last time I was pregnant, I was in my late 30's. There were lots of pluses - knowing what to expect, having been down that road before, having my oldest ds be able to help get things, etc. One of the harder things was my feeling tired a lot. I was resting mid-way up our stairway every time I went up them. Anyway, I will be praying for you, though I know the Lord will take care of you because you are His. The bar thing I was sharing for math does take awhile for kiddos to get, so no worries there. You are wise to just keep on with the hands-on things and keep reinforcing concepts that way as you move on. I'm glad to have heard from you and are praying for you! :D

Love In Christ,
Julie
