Sensitive Mommy Alert
Sensitive Mommy Alert
We just finished reading Stone Fox today and I cried the whole way through the last chapter. One of my boys was trying not to bust out laughing at me and another almost had tears in his eyes wondering if I was okay.
Are there any other books in Beyond or DITHOR Level 2 that I may need to read ahead of time?

Georgina,
I think you'll be fine with the rest of the DITHOR Level 2 books. (I haven't used Beyond yet, so I can't help you there.) Stone Fox was one of my son's favorite books last year...but it made me cry at the end, too. And, I am NOT a crier by nature!

Re: Sensitive Mommy Alert
I think it is good your kids see your heart touched by what you read. So much in our culture is telling them not to be that way and is making most kids become desensitized. I think it is great your children saw that. They can laugh because they are kids but the message still gets in their heart and I think it is a very positive one. I don't know the answer to your question but just thought I would say that anyway.
All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children. Isaiah 54:13

Re: Sensitive Mommy Alert
Gina,
I know what you mean. I cried every morning the year we read Hero Tales and Missionary Stories with the Millers. I tried to be tough for my "all" boys. They would say "Mom, not again!" I would tell them, "That really touched my heart." One time I even had to leave out a whole chapter of the book Gladys Aylward because I was completely sobbing. I had to tell my boys that it was too much for them. All the same, we wouldn't have missed those stories for the world. Thanks for the heads up on Stone Fox. I think we have that one this year as well. I will keep the tissues handy.

That cracks me up! I'm the same way. I even cried when the new Ares rocket went up yesterday. I'm such a sap, and my kids think I'm crazy. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

Re: Sensitive Mommy Alert
Oh, Stone Fox was a huge tearjerker!!!
My dd was reading it aloud to me, and passed me the book saying, "Mom, can you read a bit? It's making me cry."
So I took the book and tried, but I was already crying so it was useless.
Dh happened to be home that day, and walked by. Dd said (through her tears), "Dad, mom and I can't read this. Can you finish?"
Within 30 seconds he had tears running down his cheeks, too. The 3 of us sat on the couch together, crying and reading silently.

Re: Sensitive Mommy Alert
I pre-read Stone Fox, and was so shocked at that last chapter... the tears came instantly. I let my dd read it silently, then when we started talking about it, she got a little choked, and I think I did, too. Same thing happened when we were reading one of the Little House books and the dog, Jack, died. I could hardly get through that! Like another said, I think it's good for our kids to see that these things are truly sad. Our culture can be so calloused and insensitive. Plus, it can help them see it's OK to cry over something sad and to feel empathy for others. So don't feel bad!

Re: Sensitive Mommy Alert
Thank you all for sharing! I do not feel so silly now. I definitely agree that it is good for my boys to see my cry about a sensitive issue. My oldest has been known to be quite sensitive during movies and books when people are in danger, so that probably made him more comfortable about that. I guess he's not as sensitive to dogs though, considering he was the one trying not to laugh at me.

Re: Sensitive Mommy Alert
My sons have seen me cry my fair share of tears too. Sometimes they tear up, and other times they're looking at me wondering what in the world I am crying about! I think of it as excellent preparation for marriage, since their wives will more than likely shed a few tears too. It is a good opportunity to share our hearts. I think it's healthy!dhonae wrote:Thank you all for sharing! I do not feel so silly now. I definitely agree that it is good for my boys to see my cry about a sensitive issue.
