Bigger Science Help . . . Again.

Post by ncmomof5 » Mon Oct 26, 2009 2:00 pm

Hello All,

I am on Unit 8, Day 4 where you are supposed to do the experiments with static electricity. I found a wool sweater and tried rubbing it on a comb near a metal door knob. Nothing. ( I am doing this a day a head of time because my experiments usually flop, so I am trying to do better about trying things ahead of time to see how things work.) I also tried dragging my feet on the carpet and touching a door knob. Didn't work either. We have berber carpet. Would that make a difference? What am I doing wrong? Any and all help here would be appreciated.

In His love,
RuthAnn

Sorry, can't help out...we have cut loop carpet and it's very dry here in Las Vegas so getting shocked is something that we try to avoid on a regular basis.

Hope you can figure it out.

That's one of the things I am wondering. Maybe it is too humid here.

Hello, I am not doing Bigger, but to just show the affects of static electricity just blow up a balloon rub it on your child's head and watch their hair stand up and then use that "static electricity to try to "stick" that balloon on another object or just watch it stay on your child's head. No shock, but I think that's a good thing.

RuthAnn,

We didn't get much of a result when we tried this experiment. Here are the helps that I got when I asked what I was missing last year.

I have come to really appreciate the scientific thinking that HOD's science is helping my kids to get. And, having something not go as expected does make them think harder to try to figure it out.

No advice, but we'll be on that page on Monday. I'll see how ours goes.
