Week in Review for September 14-18

Goodness...no topic has been started for this week! EEK! I have nothing to report since we were sick all week. Please, post your updates so I can live vicariously through all of your school weeks!

We finished week 4 of Preparing and my ds loves it. He finished Life in the Great Ice Age a book he really enjoyed. He also finished the One Small Square Arctic Tundra. He made a nice notebooking page for his science this week. He is getting more independent with things. He does his timeline independently and also does much of his vocab. on his own. He was doing good narrations with Life in the Great Ice Age, but struggled some doing his written narration after reading CHOW. I think he just needs to grow into that book some and I am sure he will as we go along. He wrote a great version of "To Any Reader". To get him to understand the poem I had him picture the child in the book as Christopher Robin, so when he wrote his poem he made the comparison between seeing a cat in his backyard to seeing a fluffy yellow bear (Pooh) in the book. I loved some of the lines he came up with. He also loved doing the experiment with making a cactus and seeing how the spines and the shape cooled it off. His favorite activity this week though was the clay map. He worked very hard at shaping the clay. With his hand strength that was tough for him, but he stuck with it. He then typed all the names of the places. I did help him out by cutting out the labels and gluing them to the toothpicks (shakey hands make those activities tough), but he placed them all. I love watching his self esteem and confidence grow. Public school had shaken his self esteem quite a bit, so it is wonderful to see him realize he is capable of doing things.

I feel like we're finally in the school groove! My ds6 and dd3 know we begin school after breakfast and our morning jobs. They are no longer complaining about not being able to play all morning, they now sit in our school area and ask what fun activity we'll do today! I love it!

We worked through Unit 3, Days 1-4 in LHTH and LHFHG this week...

Ds6 LOVES the activities & projects in the curriculum, so he was especially delighted when I brought down a mini muffin tin filled with cotton balls and a plate of scent containers (LHFHG Unit 3/Day 4). My dd3 was able to participate, too!


Dd3 loves acting out the Bible stories and so she was delighted to find 3 guests to serve (her 3 favorite dolls) for LHTH Unit 3/Day 4 just like Abraham.


Abraham's tents...the project from LHTH that my dd6 wanted to do with dd3. I love how they can participate in each other's curriculum right now. It makes our school days lots of fun! Instead of paper towels to paint the stars, we used Q-tips. I'm not sure we taped the tents exactly right - the sky shouldn't really be underneath the tent but I folded the paper to make it easier for the kids to tape the tents themselves.


The yarn "C" that dd3 enjoyed doing as she was able to pick out her own colors of yarn from my stash of crochet scraps.

Hey all! I do hope everyone-- moms and kiddos alike are feeling better. I too was down this past week w/ a lingering migraine, so unfortunately we didn't get all of this week/unit finished. Planning to hold this coming week and play catch-up. Once Kasey gets everything caught up then will proceed on to the next unit.

Though I do want to share this.. because migraines are something "new" to me, my dr. ordered a MRI. Praise God, all they found was my brain My dh smirked lovingly and told me that must of been a good day if they were able to find that!
The dr. has narrowed down the cause of my headaches to stress. So what has all this to do with the weekly check-in? God used this migraine as a way to get my attention and remind me of this wonderful catch phrase we all hear all the time..."Don't sweat the small stuff." Take the moment to enjoy and LAUGH at the fact when the pile of laundry you worked so hard at folding suddenly crashes to the floor... and the culprit is your toddler.... Cherish--- that moment when your 71 year old mother Windexes your car because she knows that you never seem to find the time to wash it yourself....
Remember...even on the days you just want to scream because nothing seems to be going right....to find that one little ray of sunshine and pretty soon you'll see the clouds part from the gray.
From reading other people's threads this has been a tough week for so many, financially, emotionally, and health wise. I want to say thank you for those who lift people up in prayer. I know I never asked for an OT prayer for the migraine and mri I faced this past week, but I know in my heart there were someone somewhere praying for the needs such as mine... thankyou. I am grateful for finding this wonderful curriculum, but even more this wonderful message board that I can turn to and find others who are facing similar trials and know that I am never alone.
So with all that said.. "On to the next week!"

Nancy, I enjoyed looking at the pics of your adorable kids. Your school week sounded so fun! Wish I had started using HOD when mine were those ages.

We had another great week with Bigger Hearts, although dh left Sat. morning for a week-long hunting trip, so that left us scurrying around Friday helping him get everything ready. I tried to get a little schoolwork in, but I finally gave up and called it a 'life learning' day.

Anyway we are one day short of finishing up Unit 4. We have one chapter left in George Rogers Clark, and both kids have really enjoyed it. Next week we start our Adventure book. I have both Snow Treasure and Come on Seabiscuit--not sure which one we'll start first. I'm trying to get in at least two titles each unit for Storytime, since my dc really love to be read to.

We are really enjoying the hymn study. Last Sunday at church, we sung Holy, Holy, Holy and the kids were so excited that they knew most of the words! We are also enjoying the history book. We've studied these topics before, but the Eggleston book really ties them together in a way that we haven't experienced before. I am so glad I ended up going with Bigger--with the Extension books, it has been 'plenty' for my 11yo.

R&S English is even going pretty well. My dd, especially, really fought it at first since it is so different from what we used last year (Easy Grammar). But we are getting into a groove with it, and while she doesn't exactly enjoy it, I think she is learning and retaining from it.

Maybe next week I'll get around to taking some pics to share! I love reading about everyone else's week.

So true Jasmine. This board and the women here are wonderful. I praise God for the friendship and love here. And I am so glad that your MRI turned out okay! I can totally relate the the stress issue too. After being sick all week ourselves, our dog starting having bloody diarrhea. I was about to go over the edge! LOL He is better now and so are we. We just have to trust that God will care for us each time we need Him! And he always does!!

I have both Snow Treasure and Come on Seabiscuit--not sure which one we'll start first. I'm trying to get in at least two titles each unit for Storytime, since my dc really love to be read to.

We did Come on Seabiscuit and I have really enjoyed that book. It is not an "easy read" though - in that it is a bit longer than some of the other books chosen for this level. We are thoroughly enjoying it, but I could have never done more than just that one book as a read aloud or we would have had storytime for a hour a day! LOL

We are actually starting Unit 8 today - finishing Sea Biscuit this week...but we are not far apart at all. Loved seeing your pics and hearing about your week.

Well, we've only done the Biography unit so far and the two books we read for that were pretty short. So we may not be able to get two books in every unit! It's just so hard to decide because all the books look good, and I don't want to miss any! We probably will do Seabiscuit since my dc both love horse stories.

I have both Snow Treasure and Come on Seabiscuit--not sure which one we'll start first. I'm trying to get in at least two titles each unit for Storytime, since my dc really love to be read to.

We spent along time 'recycling' the activities in week 1 and we are now on week 2 .I wanted to take a long time and stretch LHTH over two years as he is only 2.5
