First Day of LHFHG!!!

Post by happy@home » Mon Aug 03, 2009 12:47 pm

We have just finished our first COMPLETE day with LHFHG!!!

My plan was to do LHFHG over 2 years using the Kindergarten options last year and the 1st grade options this year, but it just didn't work out   (ALL MY FAULT!). We did finish the Rod & Staff, Reason for Handwriting K, and we read The World God Made 'K'. We also finished our BJU Math K (had already purchased it before I found HOD). I wanted to keep my 2 dc together since they are so close in age. I thought that since the oldest is a boy and the youngest a girl, that my dd probably would be able to keep up with my ds which so far she has proven me right. :P

This will be "1st grade" for my ds and "Kindergarten" for my dd so we are using Thinking Skills Grade 1, Reason for Handwriting A, Our Father's World, and Primary Math 1A & 1B. I had considered (and even purchased) going through Earlybird Kindergarten with my dc because I have seen a lot of comments about Singapore's thinking being different. After looking through the Earlybird Kindergarten I think I will be fine to start Primary Math 1A. :?: Our BJU Math K was very good I think, but I want to go with Carrie's suggestions because I know she is much more knowledgeable than I in this area!

We are using the next level in Sing, Spell, Read, and Write for Phonics (another purchase made prior to finding HOD.

We started in Unit 1 even though I think we got to Unit 6. I know my dc won't mind re-reading the History and Bible stories. I am using a few different Burgess books since we read a few of those.

Sorry I rambled on. Does my plan sound alright? I feel just awful that I wasn't consistent last year, but we did do math, phonics, and writing.

We did EVERYTHING for Unit 1 today!! Both of my dc loved the "Rhymes in Motion" which is something I didn't do last year!!

Your plan sounds terrific! :D I always take the summer to reflect on my part in our homeschooling, and I usually walk away with some things I need to improve (i.e. NOT answering the phone for social conversations during homeschooling  ), and some things I liked (i.e. starting early). It sounds like you've done that same reflecting and in the process made a great plan for this year! :D Congrats on a good first day, and enjoy the rest of the week! :D

Thanks, Julie, for your reply.

We spent our "Rhyme Time" yesterday learning the words, so we added the motions today. The children laughed so hard! They really love leaping and stomping around the house! I can really see the benefit for motor development in the rhymes. The laughter though makes this mom's heart smile!

Day 2 of LHFHG was great as well!!

This is great to hear, and I totally agree. The motor development helped our dc get moving and work on left/right etc. co-ordination, but the smiles and laughter were always my favorite part of it. :D

happy@home,

I'm so glad that you had a good first few days of LHFHG. Don't be too hard on yourself about last year! I have to honestly tell you that as organized as I am I did not accomplish half of what I thought I would with my first-born kiddo when he was in Kindergarten either. I vowed to do better the following year and realized I desperately needed a daily schedule to stay on track.

As the years have passed and my oldest is now going into grade 8 , I'm getting better about moving on with the plans and meandering less. It also is a life-saver for me to have the HOD guides to use with my kiddos (as I tend to get a lot more done when the planning is taken care of for me).

Blessings,
Carrie

We finished LHFHG this spring and my kids and my co-op kids still ask me to do the "stomp stomp to Africa" song with them.

The kids made me do it with them on our hike last week. :)

Glad you are enjoying LHFHG~

Hi there,

I'm so glad you had a great first day using LHFHG :D . We did that program last year, and the kids loved it. I didn't start the Rhymes in Motions until about mid-year because I didn't realize how fun they would be  . It really made Little Hearts come "alive" for my children.

Best wishes for a happy school year!

Carrie,

Thanks for the encouragement! I have felt just awful for not doing a better job last year. So to ensure that I am totally consistent, I bought some bulletin boards "cards" at our local teacher's store and wrote the name for each "box" in LHFHG on a card, then I laminated each card and put a magnet on the back. I put all of them on the fridge each day so the kids keep me accountable for what we have to do each day. Then at supper each night the kids tell their dad what they learned in school. This REALLY helps me to be accountable for our day!

Joy & Emilylou,

We went out for supper and my dc were actually singing the rhyme in the restaurant! I did insist though that my dd SIT DOWN when she got up from the table to do the motions!

My dh said that he for sure didn't learn anything about the continents at that young of an age!

happy@home,

I love the magnet idea! What a great way to have the kiddos help keep the day moving forward. My boys would love that too! :D

I enjoyed your restaurant story (and the hiking story too, Emilylou ).

Blessings,
Carrie
