Health Education Curriculum idea anyone for 1st grade

Post by icukirt » Mon Jul 27, 2009 9:54 pm

We just moved to a new county within MD and it looks like there is a "health education" requirement that I wasn't aware of. Does anyone have a thought on an inexpensice book/curriculum that can be used for a 1st grader?
Thanks for your input!!

We are starting 2nd grade. I have "Prudence and Your Health", one of the Prudence and The Millers books, as well as the 2nd grade Abeka Health book. There is probably an Abeka 1st grade book as well.

I found the A Beka first grade health at a used curriculum sale (it's very colorful) and got the R&S 2nd grade at the Homeschool Convention. It was rather inexpensive that way. We are using the first grade one till the fall and starting the 2nd grade book next year. To see how they compare, since it is not a requirement for us!

In NY we need health each year too. I picked up the ABEKA 1st grade health, safety and manners at the used sale.
I think my son will enjoy it. It is a nice book.

In our state we need to do health every year too. We do our health education mostly through field trips:

Fire Station & then go home and draw out a fire escape map.
Personal Safety Days - Lowes often has these several times a year & our local homeschool group does one with the local Red Cross. Usually includes finger prints of your child, etc.
Field trip to a local pizza shop. We have one locally that will allow the kids to come in the morning, they get a tour of the kitchen, and get to make their own pizza. It's fun, but the kids get the biggest lesson on CLEANLINESS.
Our city has a Health Education Center to which you can schedule classes, but most cities have great Science Centers that usually include displays about health.
Dentist office. Doctor office. Hospital. Nursing Home. Just ask for a little tour!
Any food-type factory tour.
Learn the food pyramid and practice it. Read the labels on your foods. Have a blast! Who needs more curriculum?!
