Should I be introducing English and Grammar to my 7 year old

Post by JenO » Thu Jul 23, 2009 1:16 pm

I am just wondering...my just turned 7 year old is reading well. We started out with Alphphonics...that worked great. But, should I even be considering say...R&S English or Grammar for my son?

From your post it seems that you are going to do Beyond with your ds of 7. You did not mention whether your son had any grammar instructions previous and I don't know anything about Alpha phonics. There are grammar instructions in the manual once a week on Day 5. They are excellent and it is amazing how well the information sticks with the kiddo's (and Mom's from foreign lands) the way Carrie has written it. We are in week 33 of Beyond and have enjoyed it so much. I did 1st grade A Beka phonics and there is grammar intertwined with the phonics, but Carrie's way of teaching in my personal opinion was a much more of a fun way to learn and retain grammar at this level. So we ended up doing the grammar each week in addition to what A Beka had.
Succes and I hope this helps.

We also did the grammar lessons in Beyond before starting R & S 2. My ds learned a lot about the parts of speech by doing it first in Beyond, and he really enjoyed it. I'd start there and then do R & S 2 next. Grammar gets hard fast - no need to rush it.

Would you do R&S 2 if your kids are in second grade and doing Beyond? Or would you still just stick with the lessons in Beyond? Thanks, Amy

Amy,

I'd just stick with the grammar lessons in Beyond and then move into Rod and Staff 2 when you head into Bigger Hearts. We did Rod and Staff 2 with my 8 year old and found that it was perfect for him, and he really retained so much of it! We did Rod and Staff 3 when he was 9 and found it to be a great fit too. :D The grammar content in Rod and Staff is advanced, and kiddos are diagramming basic sentences already in 3.

Blessings,
Carrie
