What to buy for CTC??

Post by Mamochka5 » Sat Jul 11, 2009 10:17 am

Hi!

I'm thinking of using CTC for my 10 y.o., but I'm not sure what I need to buy. I'm trying not to go overboard w/spending, as I still need to buy curriculum for my other 4 dc. If I can only buy one book pack, should I buy the history or boy's interest pack in the CTC Basic Package, OR the DITHOR 4/5 package?? Can you do DITHOR with the CTC books, or no? Any suggestions??

Also, how much will my son miss if we don't buy the science? I've already bought the Apologia Zoology 1 (birds, bats, etc.) and was thinking to use that with all of the children, but am wondering what he will "miss" by not doing the CTC science?? It saves me $90 to not have to buy the science, but wanted to see what you all think.

Thank you! :D

My thoughts for what they are worth. Can you...

Buy the basic package
Buy the history read-alouds
Find the DITHOR books in your library?
Sell Zoology 1 and use the money to help buy the science package. :-)

If I was absolutely strapped for cash I'd probably do this....

Buy the basic package
Look through the History, Boy, & Girl Read-Alouds and see what my library had. Trying at least to get the same number of books and genres.
Option 1:
Find the DITHOR independent books at the library.
Use Zoology 1 (since you already own it)

Option 2:
Drop DITHOR and buy that gorgeous science. I figure I could use Glencoe free Literature guides and library books for reading if I had to.

Probably didn't help much. It's hard to know until we have some idea of whether you can access a good library.

Oooo, this is a tough choice! I'd get the science for sure because it is awesome, independent, had them doing an experiment each week (did I mention that's also independent  ), and it links to the history. DITHOR is awesome, and you can use any book with it. So, I'd start with the books you have on your shelves at home and sort them into genres, and fill in with what's missing. You could just buy 1/2 of the DITHOR set too, because it's only scheduled 3 x a week in CTC, and that means you'll get through 4-5 genres in the year = 4-5 books. So, that's a super easy way to save too! :D
