How to incorporate Canadian history, etc.

We live in Manitoba, Canada and are very excited to be starting HOD in the fall. I am American, so I love the American history focus and have no problem teaching it to my kids. I do, however, want them to learn equally about the history of Canada, since this is where they live and well, they are half Canadian.
I need some tips on how to incorporate Canadian history into their school year. I'm wondering if I should follow HOD for 4 days of the week and then have one full day per week that is focused only on Canadian content. ?? I don't want to overload them and confuse them. So I need ideas on how to make this work with a balanced approach.

Any ideas? Anyone else been there/done that?

I added in a good all about India Text book as an addtional reading. we did it 2 times a week with her reading it to me and some times doing fun cultural things as add ons. I Also got a steal (library book sale find) I think it is an usborn book that showed world historical events side by side. I was using it to show her what was happening in India at the same time as the pilgrims and revolutionary war etc. It was a bit to hard for her to read so I would para phrase it for her.

Of course I was doing very low key as a inform you about your heritige thing not a full bore history class.

Since we just started Beyond this spring and are now into vacation, I don't have a lot of experience yet with HOD. But I was thinking for a low-key add-on, you could read a section of My First History of Canada by Donalda Dickie each day on top of your HOD. That way you would have the blessings of the HOD history but still be doing some Canadian history. Another book that might be appropriate is Kids Book of Canadian History by Carlotta Hacker; it has colour pictures and less writing, but I'm not sure of the reading level. Looking at the levels of HOD guides you are using, I don't know of any other book covering Canadian history which would be appropriate for those young ages.

I haven't looked at the Bigger book yet, but I'm thinking you could read the Canadian history book "to see what was going on in Canada about that time." Just a thought.

You should be able to get both books out of the public library to check them out. Either can be bought at Heritage Resources in Carmen or at Followers Book Corner in Winnipeg (sorry I don't know how to do links).

Something we used this past year for Cdn. History was the CBC People's History of Canada videos. Might be a little for the older ages but really good dramatizations of Canadian History! I wish there was an American Equivalent.

My dh watched this series years ago when it first came out on CBC. I will definitely be looking into it as a possible purchase in a couple years. Or we might just try and find it at the library. Thank you for reminding me about this resource!

I'm planning on getting a few books and trying to match up the time lines so that we are reading at the same time. Where ever HOD goes into specfic, such as state history or geography, presidents or flag making, we will too.

Hello All You Fellow Canadians,

I have been on the board for a while and have "met" one other lady who was Canadian but is now living in the US. I am looking forward to the fall and as I will be doing Preparing and CTC with my kids and this is our first HOD year.

We focused on Canada last year so I am not in a hurry to include too much this year but the following year I have to make a choice about my "will be gr. 4". I had my older son do "My First History of Canada" along with the Explorers of Canada by Sonja Schild (Our Home and Native Land series Part II). They worked well together because "My First History" covers all of the explorers (12 in all) except the northern Canadian ones (3) and Samuel Hearne. However, I would have to leave HOD and do Canadian history which will be hard once we start using HOD I can already tell. I am looking forward to them learning the American history in the future guides and plan to do that idea someone mentioned about Canadian on Fridays. Also, Carrie mentions scheduling state history two days a week in the future guides and we could insert Canadian/Provincial history then too.

I am the only one I know of in my support group using HOD and I plan to tell everyone about it and spread the word!!
