science and littles

Post by jewell » Mon Feb 18, 2008 3:48 pm

We are doing elementary apologia. I had planned for my youngers to ride alone and do the lapbooks. Does anyone see a problem with that with HOD?

Heart of Dakota is so flexible, many of the moms are substituting one part or the other, and it works smoothly. So, if that works best for you, go for it :)

Well I'm a newbie with HOD but I don't see how this would be a problem. Just ignore the science box. Science isn't done everyday in the younger programs, which I think is what you are looking at. The only thing you may want to do is read the key idea to them since it ties into the history.

I think they could listen in with no problem and may even "get" some of it, but most of the apologia would probably go right over their little heads. I have heard many moms say that they are amazed at how much their littles remember though!

I would not skip the science in the Little Hands or Little Hearts. THey are some of my kids favorite things! Ya just can't beat those floating raisins! And it ties in so nicely with the history. The science is mostly experiment type activities and kids just love that sort of thing.

Carrie keeps the science simple for the littles so that more focus can be given to the all important 3 r's. I find the amount of science to be just right. I think that if they wanted to listen in....fine. But if they are not enjoying it, I wouldn't push the issue.

Just my $.02! Mel :D

I think it would be a great match. I have found it really easy to add different things and we plan on adding some Apologia ourselves when we finish the other program we are doing. The science that is in there is a good match with just about anything if you wanted more.

Hi Jewell! I think you could add in the science no problem, and also still try to do the science written in HOD's guides. You could give this a shot, and see how it goes. The reason I suggest this is because the HOD science is very short, fun, and what I love best about it is they often keep "doing it" long after we are finished with the plans, which keeps them happily occupied and learning while I move on to help another dc. This is worth a lot to me. Plus, all of the HOD science experiments truly can be done by the child, as opposed to watching the mom do it (as other programs I've used have been like). They link with the history theme as well, which is kind of nice. If you did it and thought it got to be too much, you could always just go to doing the science you're adding in. Either way, I know you'll love HOD!
