Hi! I'm new to this board and am considering which curriculum to choose. I have a 7yo ds, soon to be 9yo ds, 4yo dd and 2yo dd. I love the books from both of these curriculums.
My 7yo could go up to Bigger or my 8.75yo could come down to Beyond. Has anyone had this dilemma? What did you do/ do you suggest? I am ready to start grammar with both. Neither have had any formal grammar.
Both have done copywork and my older already knows cursive. There are just some great book titles in Beyond that I wouldn't want to miss if Bigger, and vice-versa. I would love any input!
Oh, and, we have just spent a year doing Beautiful Feet Early American History (Primary).
Thanks!

I would probably go with Bigger. My 7 and 9 year olds will be doing Bigger next year.

I have my 10 yr old in Beyond, and he's having a great time. The books aren't "babyish" so it doesn't bother him that it's really for 7 yr olds lol We use the emerging readers as out loud reading ( by my son) so I can correct his pronunciations. Then we use the deluxe readers for our formal reading. It really is a great program, I'm so glad that we decided to "keep him back" to do this one.
Have fun!

Welcome to the HOD Board! Both of those programs are awesome, so I can feel your pain as you choose. We've found the placement chart to be very accurate in placing our own dc, and proper placement really makes the year go great! So, could you please peek at the placement chart, and share about each of your dc's 3 R's - looking especially at the first page of the placement chart? That would help us all give the best advice possible! Here's a link to the placement chart:rjperez1 wrote:Hi! I'm new to this board and am considering which curriculum to choose. Re: Like Beyond and Bigger's Titles: Combine?
I have a 9 who will be 10 yr old in Sept, and a 7 won't be 8 till Jan. They are presently working at 2nd and 4th grade levels.
I actually prefer to place them both in Beyond. Neither of mine have had American history at all. We haven't done alot of Bible as an actual study or course. I feel my older dd Could really use more practice writing- I don't feel she was doing as well as she could in that area. I also feel both girls could really use some additional pracitce to really master their math facts. Now, each of the girls will be doing their own math and language arts pretty much, and reading on their own level. I am actually doing some add on work for my older dd (it is way more work for me- since there is no extension pack, but I feel she does need that additional challenge and push) In the end, I feel this is the best option for my 2 dd's since the younger placed pretty much in Beyond, and the older placed kind of spread out in various areas on the first page, but could really place in Beyond on the second page (and I am combining them mostly for what appears on the 2nd page of the assessment, and kind of doing their own for the other side)
I am being selective about what I pick for my older dd to use in DITHOR- and using some that will definately act as the extension pack. Then I am thinking of adding like a period cookbook to go along with it, or a period activity book, and possibly science- I was considering exploring creation with... apologia type, but not sure yet, even science readers would work. mainly I will just make sure she does some extra reading since she is able, and maybe encourage her to write some sentences and such...
Of course my philosophy is different than many. I feel they have their whole lives to grow up. I feel that, if she doesn't get to college until a year later than most- doesn't that mean she will be more mature and won't that be better for her? Wouldn't she be more able to resist peir pressure and such. So, I don't mind if I start her off a little easy this year, and get more challenging next year- review is always good- even if I underestimated, but, I actually think she will get alot out of it and do just fine.
