Question about The Reading Lesson

Post by Mom4Him » Sat Jun 20, 2009 2:01 pm

We have been doing The Reading Lesson for a few weeks now & my girls are loving it... and doing very well. :D They are 4 1/2 & are doing 2-3 pages a day. Is that OK or should I be slowing them down?? TRL says children under 5 should be doing just 1 page a day, but my girls want to keep going so they can read more & more "stories". I try to make sure they are only doing 3 new pages a day at the most, but often they want to keep going. It seems like a good problem to have, but don't want to be moving too fast or too slow. Any suggestions?

Mom4Him,
I think that sounds fine! :D Let them enjoy their success!! They'll most likely want to slow down at some point. I remember we flew through the first part with my son, who was a young 5yr old and then after a while it got harder and we eventually settled in to a comfortable 2 pages a day routine. They're not reading more than 15 minutes, are they? Oh, in the first three lessons, did you catch that you're supposed to try to do each page twice? The way that worked for us was to have his train or other toy "take a turn" after him. Another note: you're supposed to read the story before them for the first five lessons - I got in to the habit of doing this, and then, oops we were on lesson 9 and I was still reading the stories before my son. He balked a little, but he did then get used to reading them all on his own. By then his confidence had really grown. We've loved the Reading Lesson and I am looking forward to starting it with my 4yr old son :D Enjoy!

Thank-you for the response, Victoria!! It is so helpful to hear from others who have been there done that. :D
We are stopping at 15 minutes each day- even though they want to go longer, & we have been doing the page twice, which they don't seem to mind at all... do you find this helpful to continue doing after the first 3 lessons? I had been reading the story to them first, but found that they flew through the story even faster because they could remember what I had just read to them... so lately I've been reading it to them when they are done reading it... but I'm not sure what is best!? I am so glad to have found a program that they so enjoy!!

Mom4Him,

It sounds like your girls are doing really great! :D Regarding your question about reading pages twice after the first three lessons - we didn't. I guess by then they have a good enough foundation laid that there's no need to.

I am glad that they're loving it! How rewarding this will be for you all! :D
