[quote="threegreatkids"]I'm not that familiar with workboxes so I'm certainly not claiming that this does the same thing. Just that the idea of boxes sparked this plan, which has almost no prep and continues to use the HOD manual. It will also teach my girls to put things back and keep track of their own supplies.
For my youngest there will be a "Surprise Box" each day with a puzzle, book on tape, or other fun item.
Brilliant! I do use the workboxes and this is just as functional! For people who have the proper shelving, this is just as effective. Easy on the eyes as well.
Two thumbs up!

I loved seeing your neat and tidy shelves! I'll have to remember this two years from now when I start LHFHG.
I think I'm going to need another bookshelf though!!

Threegreatkids,
What a great idea. I have been thinking of different ways to set up my school books and yours is just another great idea. Now I just have to find the clear magazine holders. It's nice to see how well the books are sorted on one level. I also have 3 kids so that will work great!

Re: Organization idea
I found clear plastic magazine holders at Target for $2.27 each. I organized my books by subject area, and keep all my books for BLHFHG in a basket and the ones we are using that week in a file box for easy toting.

Re: Organization idea
These look great! Can I ask a question? Do you keep your "binder" next to the magazine holders or has anyone found magazine holders that can fit a binder inside? Also, I'm curious, what are the spiral notebooks you have inside your magazine holders in the picture?
Thanks,
Shannon

We're going to slide the binders next to the magazine holders, since I've not found any big enough to fit them. Should be OK.
The spiral books you mentioned are actually the parts from the appendix that each child needs. I got them spiral bound at Staples, only cost $1-2 each i think. For example, dd 9 has the Bigger extension schedule in her file for History Extension/DITHR. Each girl also has their dictation passages, poetry, and math schedule spiral bound and in the appropriate box. Next year we will just use post-its in the manual, but this was easier for them the 1st year, particularly for dd 9 whose math and dictation were out of a different manual (Preparing).

Re: Organization idea
Where do you buy the magazine boxes at? I've never noticed them in the stores, but maybe it was because I was never looking for them either. What is the average cost of each magazine box? I really like your system of organization and would like to duplicate something like that if it did not become too expensive.
Re: Organization idea
I have seen the workboxes and it just takes up a lot of space and if you don't have it, than some of the alternatives are just handier for us folks with less room. All in all it is about getting your books to be more easily accessible for yourself and your older children.I'm not that familiar with workboxes so I'm certainly not claiming that this does the same thing.

Someone mentioned Target for a couple of dollars, i think. Container Store has them, but much more expensive.playschool wrote:Where do you buy the magazine boxes at? Thanks! I will have to check out Target.
Re: Organization idea
Thanks, ThreeGreatKids! I think that's a great idea about binding up seperately the appendixes.

Just the different sections in the back of the manual...extension schedule, math schedules, spelling/dictation lists, poetry, etc. HTH!faroutback wrote:Someone mentioned appendix for the dc, what is this? Sorry if I missed it somewhere.
