Suggestions for educational objectives

Post by simplepamom » Fri Jun 19, 2009 7:40 am

I need to turn in my paperwork to our school district. One of the requirements is a list of educational objectives. After talking to a few ladies in our homeschool group, the printed, very general objectives you can see on homeschooling webistes like CHAP and PHEN, are too general. I need some help putting together some educational objectives for my dd's. The oldest is 9 and will be 4th grade, the younger is 7 and will be 2nd grade. They are doing Beyond Little Hearts together, but working individually on most of the right side- math, language arts... and I am adding some 'extra' for my older dd to make sure she isn't 'lacking' from my choice.

Older dd is using Building with diligence- the 4th grade Rod and Staff Grammar book? Younger is using the 2nd grade Rod and Staff Grammar book (preparing to build?)

I believe older dd is starting with 2b singapore math, though I am still comparing stuff as I get it in (I feel she needs to gain some speed in her basic calculations, and further master her multiplication and division facts before trying to move on), younger is starting with 1b singapore math.

The girls are also teaching my 4 yr old twins using Little Hands. (likely not daily though)

The spelling part, my older will be given dictaion that utilizes words that follow the 'spelling rules' indicated. My younger will be spelling the word lists, I have to see which word list. Older dd will be doing cursive, younger will likely be improving her handwriting.

I did pick up a workbook kind of book taking Godly care of my body, and one taking Godly care of my money- the body one will be health or at least part of health.

Could you use a copy of the table of contents of math, grammar, etc. and then copy the first several pages of the HOD guide that gives more detailed objectives for Beyond's subjects?? Or perhaps for math, there is a scope & sequence or something similar you could use. There's lots of info in the fronts of the guides as well as on the web pages for the individual guides. Maybe something there would be what you need.

Brenda-

I have to do educational objectives for my children as well---in PA. They are in the same grades as your two girls. Last year I obsessed over getting them "just right."

But in the end, I used the table of contents from our math curriculum (as the prior post suggested) and then generalized the other subjects so that I could essentially use them for the duration of the elementary school years with just minor "tweaking" from year to year as they develop. Don't get me wrong---I am not a minimalist at all. I want to be thorough and complete with their education, but the elementary years are really just an expansion and building upon the basics.

I don't know if this would be the proper place to post them, but if you want to e-mail me direct, I would be willing to share mine with you. PA Moms unite! :D

The law is hard to work with here sometimes, I know!

We haven't placed our order yet....turning in our portfolio on Monday. But we are prayerfully planning on using Beyond for 7 ds and Preparing for 10ds this up-in-coming year.

I would do what the previous poster suggested and use the Introduction with the Learning with History components and Learning with the Basics components. Do they have paperwork already that you have to fill in or do you just turn in paperwork you have made detailing your plan? If it is the latter, I would go to the guides you are using pages on HOD and print out the introduction from the pdf. If you have to include specific things such as name, grade, age, curriculum, etc...in a document that you prepare, then I would pull up that pdf and copy and paste what I needed into a word document. That way you can slim it down if you need to and add where you need to for each kid. This would save you in time typing it all back out also.
Looking at the components part of the BHFHG guide now, it looks like plenty for you to include in your educational objectives.

Most moms we've talked with at conventions that have to have objectives do exactly what has been described - they copy the Table of Contents and Introduction and turn those in. They also show their portfolios and guides if it's a sit-down kind of a deal (if you meet with someone face-to-face). HTH!

I'm in PA too! I'll share my objectives from last year with you if you like but mine are based on Bigger. I got my advice from a dear lady at church who has been homeschooling for like 20 years (actually her baby just graduated last month but she was still more than willing to help)

I hear you on getting a portfolio in. I just sent in my son's CAT test last week so I'm pushing deadlines here.

What state do you live in? Could you look at your state's core content curriculum standards to help you write your objectives? Here are New Jersey's: http://www.state.nj.us/education/cccs/
