Handwriting???

Post by rni'smommy » Tue Jun 16, 2009 6:43 pm

In LHFGH you choose between ARFH K or A if you choose K do you do A with Beyond? I noticed that Beyond did not have a handwriting choice, is this because of the copywork? How does the handwriting work in future guides?

I am not sure what anyone else has done, but we are planning to do just what you said. We used K with LHFHG and I have A to use with BLHFHG. I am in the process of going through the TM planning my next year, and I have seen that there is copywork, which I am guessing would cover the handwriting portion. My dd really likes working in workbooks, so I plan to use the workbook to make her happy, and try to get her to do some of the copywork. I am interested in hearing what others have to say on this topic.

rni's mommy,

Beyond does schedule daily copywork from the classic poetry studied each week in Beyond. If your child isn't quite ready for copywork but is ready for the rest of the skills in Beyond, you could use the first grade handwriting workbook option from LHFHG with Beyond. We'll be doing this with our third little guy whose 6 when he heads into Beyond this upcoming year. :D

It is a good idea though for the last half of Beyond to also move into doing copywork as that is a skill that will be needed in Bigger Hearts the following year.

Blessings,
Carrie

So then, if I am understanding this the only time you use workbooks for handwriting is in LHFGH after that it is just copywork.

You do handwriting again when you start cursive. We are doing it in BHFHG right now with cursive.

We did A Reason for HW A as a transition to Beyond's poetry copywork. It worked great! Copywork is done after that for handwriting, which has been a great progression. Meaningfully writing something according to a model is always a good thing! Then, cursive is done with Bigger Hearts, with optional copywork of the poem each week too. We did both, and I had my ds copy the poem in print and do his cursive only in his Cheerful Cursive book. In PHFHG, copywork, dictation, and written narration work together to create strong LA skills. A portion of the written work each day is suggested to be done in cursive. This mix of cursive part of the time and print part of the time in PHFHG kept my ds proficient at both types of writing, which was so good for him. I really like HOD's progression of LA skills. It works very well! :)
