Will this work for LHFHG in the fall? (Scheduling question)

Post by Jessi » Tue Jun 16, 2009 6:25 am

We have already completed 11 units and decided to take a break this summer. Originally I was going to school through the summer but instead we are backing off and only doing phonics and some simple math activities. So in September we are picking LHFHG back up on unit 12. My thought was to slow down to a four day week going full speed. I don't want to go half pace as she truly IS ready for the full pace. Also, if I don't slow us down somehow we'll be done by March and I'd rather try to make it last until closer to next summer, that way we can begin Beyond for her first grade year without all the tweaking. She was ready for LHFHG early but it has been more difficult planning it so she falls into the next guides correctly.

So would moving to a four day week work well? I am writing out a "loose" schedule for the school year and would appreciate input.

If you have another idea I'd love to hear it.

Thanks!
Jessi

Hi Jessi! :D Yes, I do think that sounds like a great idea! :) Doing LHFHG 4 days a week will be so nice; you'll have the fifth day off, and she'll be a bit older when she gets to Beyond then. You could even begin Beyond half-speed at the point that she finishes and just see how far you got with that before the next summer break. Your little one is doing so well - I'm so proud of her! She jumped right in and did LHFHG so well, even though she was on the young side. Way to go! :)

I would think that should work out. If you still needed a few weeks worth of work you could always add a week's unit study at Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter.

hmmmm unit studies. That is an idea. I hadn't thought of that. More to ponder. :-) I love all this freedom!

Jessi,

I think that your plan sounds great! :D We did the same thing with Greyson, doing it half-speed the first year when he was a new 5 year old and then the following year bumping up to full-speed 4 days a week. I loved the breathing room I had with LHFHG at 4 days a week, and he loved having a special Friday schedule for things like computer, exercise video, book on tape, and playing with his big brothers and cousins. :D It worked out great for us. After a year at half-speed, Grey was more than ready to do full speed 4 days a week the following year. :D

We'll be heading into Beyond at 4 days a week this year. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Yes, I think we'll do the 4 day week plan. Thanks for the encouragement.

When you do 4 days a week, do you just do the 5th lesson the following Monday?? I think 4 days a week sounds like a good plan for us too :)

Yes, that is how we did it. We just did school 4 days a week (M-Th) and did a lesson a day, picking up on Monday where we'd left off on the previous Thursday.

:D Blessings,
Carrie
