Do any of you buy all read alouds?

Post by Jessi » Tue Jun 16, 2009 6:46 am

I am seriously thinking about purchasing all three (classic, boy interest, and girl interest) with each guide. I know that with having a daughter and a son eventually I'll want to have both interest sets anyway. I thought about reading the classic set with them for storytime and having the gender led interest sets for bedtime readings or something like that. Or even for when they are older and want to read on their own. Does any one else do this? I am a book-aholic and I have a hard time saying no to books. please tell me I am not alone.

hehe Have a great day!

I say, if you have the means, then do it! I haven't bought all the sets of books for the read-alouds, but I do buy all the sets I need for the program, rather than depending on the library. I like to have nice, new books for school and not having the hassle of having to go to the library. I figure that, at some point, the kids will be old enough to read them on their own, so you really are creating a library of great literature for them that they will use for years. I love books too!

Oh, I'm with you! I love books and can never get enough.... :P Next year we'll do Beyond and I'm sure I'll be buying the boy interest set as well as the classic set. If you can afford it and you have the bookshelf space, then go for it! Can never have too many books, IMO. :D

I love books too! :D I purchased the girl set for Beyond, and some from the Classic set. But, I will eventually purchase the boy set too.... so, I am figuring, "why not buy the whole set"! We will do the girl set this fall, and do some of the classic set during the summer for fun. Now, I just need another bookcase! :?

YES - Book lovers unite! :D :D :D That is exactly what I've done. I too had trouble choosing, and then eventually just got them all. I keep just one of the sets for Storytime, and the other 2 sets I have put on a shelf for them to read on their own, or used them for DITHOR choices. Those books are all just too great not to own. Every time I'm in Barnes and Noble or at a book fair, I'm surrounded by a sea of books and it's tough to weed the good from the bad. I like that HOD has already done that for me with their sets of books and have decided I just want to own them because they are all that good. Great question! :D Have a good day, Jessi!

Another book addict here! :P I bought the book list from HOD, and now I take it with me any time I'm going out so just in case I'm near a used bookstore, I can go in and buy, buy, buy from that list! I also have been known to put books from the reading lists into my Amazon cart and let it sit there. Then, after a few days, I end up convincing myself that since I've spent all that time putting that stuff in my cart, I should just go ahead and click "Purchase". But, boy do I have a nice, full bookshelf of terrific literature pre-reviewed by HOD! I LOVE it! And, the great thing is, that my children have developed a love of reading. My oldest daughter now fully trusts Carrie's opinions on good books (as do I), because she has only found 1 in all those many that we've read that she didn't like! :) With 7 kiddos, we will most certainly use these books for quite some time!

Thank the Lord for HOD!

I bought the classic set to go with the program when I first bought Beyond. Since then, I've been collecting the others through paperbackwap.com. I was also able to get most of the emerging readers this way too! I am such a sucker for books. DH thinks it's a disease I have. He cringes whenever I go to a book store or sale. But he's very thankful that I've started swapping books online to save a few dollars. And my poor father has said he refuses to move those book boxes again when we move. (He's already moved them 4 times! )

Yay!!! I am not alone.

Julie- how do you determine what levels those books are for DITHR? Are they included in the book list you get with each level? Or did you just figure it out on your own?

Leanna- I like the idea of using them for summer reading too. Good idea!

Although I have not purchased all the read alouds at one time, I do pretty much what Julie mentioned. We use one set for storytime, another set for DITHR, and then other set(s) for summer/spare time reading. It sure does make it easier to have good books on the shelf ready to go for whatever is needed.

I just figure it out on my own - ballparking if it's where my dc are reading. :D I did this prior to DITHOR's book packs becoming available. Since there are book packs for 4/5 now, I'll use the boy interest 4/5 pack next year. I'm excited about these titles, as they've been hand-picked for being good independent reading titles (which can be different types of books than good read-aloud books.) Then, I'm going to use the boy and girl CTC Storytime titles for Wyatt for his independent reading shelf. Carrie actually decided to make the DITHOR 4/5 book pacs after I'd been bugging her for ideas for Wyatt for DITHOR 4/5 last year. :D I'd used up the 2/3 titles and loved them, and I wanted her ideas for the 4/5 level then. That's when she realized there were probably other people out there like me wanting help choosing too. :D Oh, and just to show you I'm totally bonkers when it comes to books - I also want Wyatt to read the DITHOR 4/5 Girl Interest Set too.

I'm already starting my collection. I do want to buy all of the books so that my kids would have the choice for which book to read. They all look good and would be too hard to pick.

If funds were available I'd do it...however things are tight this year so for Beyond I am having to purchase only those that I couldn't get from the library. (The list was very small!!) :D I will purchase any books that my children take a liking to this year!! I love buying books but have very little space for them!! That causes me to be very careful on how much I purchase. :D

I just about finished catologuing all of our books, and after 13 years of homeschooling we have over a thousand books :!: :!:  :D
I ran out of library pockets (the pockets in the back and the sign out sheets 'cause we now lend them out) and had to order another box!
You know something though almost every book has been enjoyed by one of us. Praise God we have a house full of readers!
