On a new adventure..

Post by NoodleMom » Wed Jun 03, 2009 9:19 am

Thought Id give a quick intro.
I have ten kids, six of whom are at home still. I have homeschooled in the past. Our youngest son "Skooch" was diagnosed with ADHD in November 2008. I did begin to HS him last fall but with my illness and his disorder it became very unproductive for both him and I. We enrolled him in 2nd grade. He has had a terrible year in the school system. What with him trying to adjust to his meds and trying to find the right dosage he really had no chance of succeeding. He now has very little confidence in himself and has lost his love for learning. I knew what we could do to remedy his situation but due to my health and our family dynamics I saw it as impossible. I felt that my son would be among the wolves and I could not rescue him. I prayed that the Lord would either give us a solution or change his circumstances or give me peace that he would be okay.

The peace never came, the circumstances changed but for the worse. They want to retain him as he "has not met grade expectations". The solution... God gave me a thought. Could my HubbyMan teach him? He is a Prof at the local college here, his hours are flexible and both he and Skooch are night people and definitely not morning people. The two of them could do Math and Language Arts(the two things he struggles with the most) in the evenings. Skooch and I could do some fun stuff like Science and History from living books, (not texts and worksheets) research stuff on the computer and Art projects.

I am on a parenting board where HOD was a topic. I really liked what I saw and shared it with it HubbyMan who was all over doing school with Skooch and he liked also. We plan to do a trial run this summer. We haven't quite made the decision between Beyond and Bigger yet. Im leaning toward Bigger.

I know that I will have lots of questions and still have lots of working the details out. The 24/7 is something I need to work out still. Family dynamics and stressors are such that I absolutely need to make intentional breaks in my week.

I am feel blessed that God has guided me on my journey to HOD. Looking forward to getting to know ya'll.

Kasey,

I just wanted to welcome you to the board and let you know we're glad you're here! I'll just move this post over to the Main Board so more of the moms will get a chance to respond. All new posts begin on the Main Board. :D

If you get a chance to check out the placement chart to let us know were your son fits on the first page of the chart that would help us to advise you better when choosing between Beyond and Bigger. http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php

Blessings,

Hi Kasey! I just wanted to welcome you to the HOD boards, and encourage you that HOD is about the most flexible program I've ever used. There are so many families using HOD in so many different situations, and yet all of us love what we are doing with HOD. :D My mom and dad have even filled in and taught HOD for me when I was hospitalized and also when I've been gone for conventions. They did a super job of picking it up and teaching. I know your dh could as well. I would love to know more about your ds after you've checked out the placement chart. We will all gladly chime in and talk through some ideas with you then. The placement chart is easy to use and fast. It is extremely accurate in properly placing dc. If you could especially share a bit about your ds's reading, writing, math - that would be super. Looking forward to getting to know you better!

In Christ,
Julie
