Apologia/Beyond question

Jacob is really wanting to do the Land Animals of the Sixth Day along with Beyond, actually he wants to start this summer with the Apologia book. However, I think one of the guides uses this, can't remember which
He is 8 and a science lover! Should we wait and do this later or get one of the other Apologia guides or just use the science in Beyond and add in library books or etc. (I know that's a big run on sentence. I'm in a hurry! )
I am totally fine either way. However, he's anxious to add in the Apologia.
So, just would like some input!

Could you use one of the other two Zoology books instead? If you haven't already done them I would choose one of those. I wouldn't use it b/c I would be disappointed when I got to the Ancients guide! But that's just my .02 cents!

Yes, I had thought about doing another one of the books. Land animals seems to be his favorite though!
I wish he was ready for Bigger science, but after looking it over, he's not. We haven't gotten very far with our science previously, even though he's more than ready to do more.
I will have a little time to look it all over. Thanks for the help!

If I were in your shoes, and only homeschooling one child, and that child expressed a specific interest in learning something like that, I would seek to make it work if at all possible. You never know where his interest might lead, and it seems like if you can capitalize on a strong interest he has, than that is worth doing. He sure will get alot out of it, if it's something that HE is wanting to do. I think it's one of those moments where you could let the ideal curriculum flow go to serve the unique interest/needs of your child. That's just my two cents.

Since Land Animals of the Sixth Day is scheduled for the first 17-18 weeks of CTC, I wouldn't use that with your son right now because this would mean you wouldn't be able to use the science as independently scheduled for the child to do on his/her own in CTC. There are many, many wonderful books on land animals, so it would be easy to supplement with something else that fits that desire of his.

I would stay away from any of the science books scheduled in HOD, as you may wish later that you had (when you're having to come up with your own plans to replace what we've written)! Ask me, how I know this!?!

Have you ever heard of True Books? Or Let's Read and Find out books? You can get them from the library and there are a LOT of both series. Maybe if you just have him reading some of those books, or even an animal encyclopedia he'd enjoy that without overloading him. Just a thought.

Wow, there are a lot of Read and Find Out Books! We have checked out some of those from the library, but I'm not sure if our library carries all of them.
I don't think I've seen the true books. I would like to look into those also.
Anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to type that list. I will print this out and use it as a guide!

Carrie, I agree about not doing the Land Animals next year. I think Jacob would be fine with something else. He had science in the co-op we participated in this past year and we may do that again. It was not enough in the co-op to be a complete science program, but lots of experiments and stuff. I appreciate your help!

Patience, you are so right about the interests! However, it's kind of sad. Jacob wants to be a vet someday, but he has major allergies. He is big time allergic to cats, somewhat to dogs and who knows what else! We are able to have a dog outside (thank the Good Lord), but being a vet might be out of the question. Then again, he might outgrow?? Who knows?
We also deal with big time peanut allergy (contact and ingestion) and lots of stuff outside. We are being checked presently for asthma!
This is one of the reasons we homeschool! Keep us in your prayers, we recently had blood drawn to check his nut allergy and we are waiting for the results!
I know I'm off topic, but just had to throw in a prayer request!

My boys love science, too. The best investment for our money has been the purchase of the National Audubon Society's Field Guides. We buy the "grown-up" ones and both of my sons love them. My oldest son in particular has learned more from those guides than from anything else. The mammals field guide is my youngest son's favorite! Just thought I'd mention those. We use our field guides for nature study and they read them in their free time.

Tina- Does your library have an inter-library loan system? I think my actual library has only 5 of those titles but we have the loan system so I can access all of those books through that. Check and see if your library is capable of doing that. True books are for a bit older independent reader (9-12) but you could read it to him as well and the pictures look amazing (more photographic). Keep in mind I have not read the true books other than looking at some samples so exercise caution before reading to your children. As in everything- try to pre-read to know the content.
