Spelling Lists in Bigger...

Does Bigger have 2nd and 3rd grade spelling list or 3rd and 4th?

I don't know what grade level, but there is one spelling list and then some dictation passages. We've used the spelling list this year and will move into the dictation when we finish.

As far as I know Bigger's spelling list is list 2 from Beyond and if they are done with that, they move on to dictation.

Yeah, my dd is finishing 3rd grade using k12 curriculum- and her words were much harder than the words in bigger. I just kind of figured I would flip flop, have her do some dictation, and on other days have her practice spelling some 'harder' words with the same rules. I would have to look our my old teacher's guide, but I am pretty sure my dd's spelling words last year were harder also (that would be 2nd grade)

I pulled my dd from ps 3rd grade to do Bigger and thought the spelling was "too easy". But now I have discovered the magic that is DICTATION and can really see how effective it is. It teaches not just spelling, but context, punctuation, writing, capitalization, all of it. I really love it and am sold on it completely moving in to 4th grade.

Also, I "assumed" the words were too easy, but was given the whole 3rd grade 'words to know' list when I pulled her and recently tested her. She new them all. I'm convinced that's because of our emphasis on reading and dictation.

I may still do some spelling lists for fun, because my dd thinks it's fun, but dictation will be our main source of learning spelling from here on out.

LeAnna,

The spelling list that is included in Bigger Hearts is List 2, which is appropriate for an average 2nd grader. If the spelling lists are too easy, then you move on to the dictation passages which are appropriate for an average 3rd grader. However, kiddos who are new to dictation, may need to use the first level of dictation passages even if they are older (as dication requires much more skill than memorizing a list of spelling words). Dictation requires capturing entire passages/sentences in fhe mind and then reproducing them after only one dictation session (no repeating by mom or dad) with all capital letters and punctuation correct as well as the spelling of all words within the passage. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
