4th grade reading package?

Post by RebekahDW » Sat May 16, 2009 6:39 pm

I found the girl's interest book pack on page 58 of the catalog. It would be perfect for my 4th grader. Where does it fit into the Prepare reading program?

As long as I am asking: I am planning to do Beyond with my 1st grade girl and 2nd grade boy. In the deluxe package could he read the boy interest set on his own? Could I read each separately if I choose the girl and boy interest sets or would it be exhausting?

edit: Thank you, Tamara. I have gained insight and a new set of questions!

For the 4th grader, I will read the basic package and she will read the deluxe package and/or the girls interest book pack? I guess I could get both and let her choose or wait for the girls pack next year? I do read to my kids: Pollyanna, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, ect. . . but as an extra this year.

Now, if I am already reading to the 4th grader, I should probably get the classic set of read aloads for the other two. Then I see that I will get the level 2 book pack for my 2nd grader (I was missing this) which parallels the emergent reader set for my 1st grader. (So, maybe next summer they could read the others on their own?) What do I need to do for my son this summer to make sure he is ready for the level 2 book pack? He mastered ABeka's phonics/reading program for 1st grade.

The deluxe packages for all the guides are intended as fulfilling the Read-Aloud or Storytime section of the plans. There are narration and discussion activities planned to go along with them. If you like to read-aloud, you could get both the girl and boy interest set, but I bet they will both want to listen in on both! :D The readings are a reasonable length and the only one I found to be long was Ginger Pye. Great book though!
Typically, the story-time books are above the independent reading level for the ages for that particular guide (i.e. Beyond's read aloud set is most likely above the reading level of your 2nd grader). But, if they are on his level and as long as you do a storytime book that fits the genre of the plans in addition to the book he is reading himself, he could read those on his own. I just wouldn't drop reading aloud! It's a very important part of learning and with the HOD plans, it's wonderful!

Rebekah,

On p. 58 of the new catalog, you'll find the girl interest set that goes with DITHR. So you're right! That set is actually intended for your daughter to read along with the units in our literature program Drawn into the Heart of Reading.

The Deluxe Package for Preparing Hearts is for your daughter to read also, along with the plans in the history portion of our guide. So, those books go with the history. :D

The Basic Package in Preparing Hearts is meant to be read-aloud by you to give a historical fiction perspective and feel for the time period/setting etc. It balances out the nonfiction readings you're doing in the Reading About History box.

When you begin with the Emerging Reader's Set, make sure to choose the easier Bible for your son in order to help him have a good start for the set. The easier Bible is the Early Reader's Bible. :D

I hope that helps!

Blessings,
Carrie
