How to use Beyond & MFW Adventures together?

Post by happyWImom » Sat May 16, 2009 9:42 am

Hi!
We are brand new to HOD, and I am thrilled to find it! I feel like it's the perfect thing for us. We are using MFW 1st this year, and I had planned (and purchased) Adventures for next year. After really going over it in depth, I didn't think it was exactly what we needed. Then I found HOD and Beyond Little Hearts! My question is, I know it makes things more complicated to try & combine curriculums, but I do like certain aspects of Adventures, especially the state studies. Beyond is going to be my main curriculum, but has anyone had success combining the two? Any advice would be much apppreciated.

Thanks,
Tammi

Hi Tammy, and welcome to the HOD Board! :D I haven't done MFW Adventures, but I have done Beyond Little Hearts (twice now), and I know you are going love it! It is a very full program, but it is also time conscious. It takes us about 2 1/2 hours to get done. So, I think it would very easy to add in some states studies. You could start off just using Beyond as it is for a month or so, and then add whatever else you wanted if you still wanted to at that point? Then, you'd know better how the plans flow and how the day goes. That's just an idea - I hope you enjoy Beyond as much as we have! :D

I did part of Beyond and part of Adventures. I also hear that Bigger has some state study??? Anyway, we did the state study pages in MFW when we hit Beyond's 13 colonies. So everytime we hit a new colony, we pulled out the state sheet and did that. Look ahead a bit and see where to fit in the colonies. I am saving the rest of my state study sheets for Bigger. Towards the end of Beyond you'll hit the Wilderness Trail which takes you to Kentucky, so we did the state sheet of Kentucky. After that they go to Indiana and we pulled the state sheet for that. The state sheet entailed finding the state on the map, coloring in the state on the map, we also placed a puzzle piece, colored the state sheet, added the postal code and capital, bird and flag. If you do these like MFW wants, you'll do 3 states a day, which is really overkill. To take these state sheets and add them into Beyond and Bigger so stretches it out longer and isn't so redundant. Because after the 13 colonies, it's getting to be a drag. It works out really good this way.

I switched midyear from Adventures to Beyond. I had a good experience with both curriculums but I am very pleased I mad the switch to HOD. I do think it gets really confusing to try to combine two. It just becomes too much to juggle unless you are a very organized type of person. That being said, I did end up after a while, having my children keep working on their state sheets, since they were very easy to encorporate when I had the time and required nothing more than, "let's do a state sheet today". So if its the state sheets you like, I'd say, yes, that would be simple to add in, but I personally would suggest just choose one curriculum and stick with it and let "the other great things" go.
