Learning States, Capitals and Presidents

Hi -
I will be using Bigger Hearts For His Glory with my 9 yo dd this Fall. As of yet, we've not worked on memorization of the typical social studies lists: states, capitals, and presidents. Is this an area that BHFHG covers or or does Carrie make suggestions/recommendations about this type of memorization?

I thought about this very same thing and I thought that I'd buy a United States puzzle to help with learning the names of the states, locations, and capitals. I have not really given much thought to memorizing the Presidents, though.

I don't know about presidents, but I meshed state study sheets which I believe you can get from Dover Publishing, it's a coloring book on the 50 states . We did the first 13 colonies in order, their capitals, Postal code, flag and state info. Now I'm just adding in a state whenever we get to it. So like in Beyond, we're on the Wilderness Trail so I'm doing Tennessee and Kentucky state sheet. Then we find it on the map. I have a US map that I can color in and a US Puzzle, so we locate it, color it on the map and locate the puzzle piece.

I'll be interested in Bigger too where I can "finish" my state study, because I ordered it as well.

Bigger Hearts has the dc make index cards for the states and their capitals. We enjoyed doing this within the context of history as the states came up, and the plans to review the cards were fun and helped my ds know them. Presidents, likewise, are studied within the context of the history being read as they come up chronologically. This helped our ds really know and remember these great men, as well as link their names to important historical events.

Oh good. Then I can stop our state sheets until I start Bigger! I didn't know either if it was covered, so I did the colonies. I'll put the rest on hold till then.

As an added fun, educational activity to learn states-- locations, capitals, etc-- you can try www.sheppardsoftware.com.

They have US and World Geography that goes from very basic to very advanced. I think they have presidents as well, math, vocab and other games.

Yep, just checked...they have presidents, government, states, capitals, landscape (rivers, lakes, oceans...) on several different levels. You just click on US Geography on the main page.
