Sharing prayer with husband

Post by Dorla » Tue Feb 12, 2008 12:09 pm

How did you do this? Did you pray with him? Did you just incorporate it into family worship? Did you do it at all?
I totally forgot!!!!!!!!!!!!! My quiet time was at 5am today and my husband does not wake up until 7:30am. So by the time we had family worship I had totally forgotten about this detail.

Dorla,

I am guessing that I am going to be the oddball on this one. The first read through God's Hand will probably be just for me. I am actually already close to the third chapter (just received it yesterday) and will probably just keep on reading as much as I can, when I can. I know it is supposed to be a daily devotional however, I can't seem to put it down at this point. I just want to keep going!
After reading through once, I intend to begin again (and read as a daily devotional) and share prayer time with my daughter and perhaps with my husband a well. Oddly enough, I don't think I have really ever prayed with my husband before. I know that sounds terrible, but I am really new at being an active Christian, if you will. Perhaps that is why I don't want to stop reading, I just feel like I am learning/gaining so much from it already. So anyway, a really long answer to your question!

I actually will probably mention to my husband that there is a suggestion for prayer time and then I will see what he says. If he is interested maybe I will incorporate the prayer time with him.

Boy, I sound terribly confused!

Hi Dorla! I didn't start this either until a couple of years ago, and it was kind of awkward to begin with, mainly because my hubby isn't very comfortable with prayer (he grew up repeating the same prayer each time). My hubby and I have done this different ways. When we go to bed the same time, we hold hands and I say a simple prayer such as the one in the devotional. Now we do it right before he gets out of bed to go to work - I'm not technically up then, but I'm awake and we hold hands and pray together. It has done wonders for us starting our day together this way. I usually try to make part of my prayer be about thanking him for being a good provider for our family, and also for anything pressing he has at work that day. I also keep it short - that's what works for us! HTH!

My hubby and I started praying together years and years ago it really helped our marriage! We just started praying before we went to bed at night. Some times we read out of the bible. When we came to work at Gospel for Asia. I really felt compelled to pray for my hubby more than I was. So everyday before he goes to work I pray him out the door., even if he has to wake me up! he says it helps him so much to know I pray for him. In fact about a year ago he started praying for me in the mornings too.

I love Gale Erwin's take on incorperating "Jesus Time." into his family.
he is a very popular speaker and travels a lot. So they didn't have time for Family devotionals. So he said I'm paraphrasing from memory "Jesus Time" is all the time. If you are in the car and you hear of a prayer request well you just start praying!
You take every chance to pray. He hopes that is what without ceasing means... Oddly enough I have a very good friend that does this. I think she's says its cause she forgets to pray if she waits and doesn't want to miss her opportunity. I have started to behave like her too and it's weird yet refreshing!

Over time I have noticed more and more prayer seeping into our lives and i love it. One day we made a treasures in heaven box and decided to put our missionary we support in asia, our "bridge of hope" kid, and lots of other missionaries we know in the box pictures with a prayer requests. We then take the front 3 cards and pass them around the table before we eat and incorperate them into our grace. Now I know if i had tried to make this happen it never would have, but now it's just apart of our lives.

Glad you liked that idea - my husband shares so much more about the stress of his work day now with me. I hardly even knew what he was doing most of the day before we started praying together, but I will say it took awhile for it to be comfortable. Hope it draws you close together as well!

Tansy - I like the treasure box idea! Did you put pictures on the cards or on the outside of the box? Do you just write the prayer requests on the cards? That's a neat idea for our children to learn to branch out with their praying as well.

uhhh 3x5 cards pictures pasted on em, but lots of the pre printed prayer cards we have fit in the box as well. It was once a dark blue box and I glued stars and moons on the outside. But the TX sun has faded it to a taup color..

We also have lots of field requests! we add those in for a little while its great to see them answered...

Like the ppl in India asked the kids at the ministry to pray it wouldn't rain until the lake they were digging (by hand!) was finished the monsoons started 6 hours after they were done. That was cool!

It puts me at ease to know that others feel uncomfortable with the idea of praying, or I should say praying together. Tonight I shared with my husband about the devotional, the prayer suggestion (husband & wife together), and this particular thread. He seemed open to the idea (praying together) but said, "lets take it in baby steps." So, he obviously feels uncomfortable, which in turn makes me a bit uncomfortable. I am not complaining though, I think a door has been opened, even if just a little bit.
