Order of "boxes"

Post by mom@home » Fri May 01, 2009 3:45 pm

As I have been looking over my BHFHG TM, I wondered if there was a particular order you used when working through your day. This is my first year with HOD. We have always done our Bible Study first thing, but I noticed that the BHFHG Bible Study goes along with the History Box so would the history reading need to be done first. What about the right side of the page verses the left?
Thanks for any help!

We usually start with the History and Storytime readings then move into Bible so that they make the connections.

I usually exercise in the morning (starting before the kids are up). So, Grant starts on things he can do himself when he wakes up - like Cursive, English, Math (when there wasn't an activity), piano practice. He usually didn't do all these things, but some of them. After I shower, we eat breakfast. Then we would officially "start" the day with our history reading and the rest on the left page. It flowed better for me with doing the history before Bible, too, because the key idea connection seemed to make more sense and be more meaningful if we'd already read history. (Plus we liked finishing our time upstairs on the left page with the Bible and singing together. :D )

Then, we'd move to the other independent things that he hadn't finished plus violin practice. If we still have time before lunch, we do DITHOR, science and storytime. Often these 2 we've waited until the little 2 are napping to do. (I let the kids all play outside for an hour+ after lunch.)

You can truly do it any way that works for you. (I love that about HOD!)

We start with the history then move to the activity below it. Next is poetry then spelling/dictation. Then bible and music. I dismiss one ds to play with younger siblings while I do lessons with other ds for math, grammar, reading and anything else he needs done individually. Then I switch ds's. When I am done with lessons they do independent seatwork. I play with the 2 and 4 year old, plus we do their lesssons. Then lunch. We also take a nice long recess at lunch time. Then when dd is napping we finish up...storytime, science, art and latin.
Hope this helps! Its hard to type with a 2 year old on your lap :)
Blessings,
Michelle

I did BHFHG and LHFHG last year, so I was looking back at my schedule to refresh my memory. I really liked that schedule! Since I was teaching 2 HOD programs, I alternated my teaching time between them, so my son doing BHFHG rotated between independent things and teacher-directed things with me. First, I gave my ds any directions (or did and hands-on activities - they're short) he needed to be able to work independently on: Cheerful Cursive, R & S Grammar 2, and Singapore Math at the dining room table.

Next, he and I did the Reading about History box and the History Activity box together at the kitchen table. Everyone joined us (even baby) for the Corresponding Music box, which is the singing of the hymn, marching around the kitchen. We loved this, and all marched around singing together. :D Then, we did Poetry and Bible Study together on the couch.

Then, everyone joined in for the Storytime read-aloud on the couch. Next, he did his Copywork of the poetry, studied for dictation (which I then did with him), and copied his Bible verse if it was a day he did that. Next, we did DITHOR, and he finished it independently. Last, was Science.

We've found with all of the HOD Guides that it's nice to try to keep the left side of the boxes of plans clumped together somehow if possible, since those boxes are all connected to the history reading. It just makes those connections clearer and more memorable. Otherwise, we've found there to be a LOT of leeway in what order the boxes are done, as evidenced by all of these great HOD posts already. :D

Carrie,

Thank you for posting the schedule link. This is very helpful to me. I just started to pray for wisdom on how to schedule next year and then I saw this! :)

There are so many nuggets of wisdom on this board. :D I appreciate it when you direct us to them!
