Anyone use R&S text as a workbook?

Post by Patience » Wed Apr 15, 2009 11:50 am

I was wondering if anyone lets their kids write in the textbooks and use them as a consumable. I haven't used R & S yet, so tell me would this work? And in case this is helpful info, I plan to teach my fourth and 2nd grader together from the 2nd level of R& S next year. My daughter is really taking an interest in writing & so I've added a time for her to write based on her interests. I want her to be free from as much other writing as possible. I will be teaching the 2nd level of R & S to my two kids at the same time.

Hi Patience,

I need to make sure I understand what you're asking!

Are you referring to the R&S Preparing to Build text book, grade 2? There really isn't enough "space" in the book to do the writing. If you haven't already, you can check out the layout and sample pages at milestoneministries.com. Actually, there isn't that much assigned writing in Preparing to Build English 2. My daughter just writes out her assignments in a separate notebook. It doesn't take her long to do her assignments either, less than 10 minutes usually. It's a great program, a very thorough but gentle approach to teaching English. We love it!

Hope that helps.

Yes that's the one. I suppose that's a bad idea if there is not enough room to write!

I think they sell worksheets that correspond with the lessons. It's something new, so I don't know for sure what they look like, but it's worth looking into if you want to cut out some of the writing. FWIW, we do a lot of Rod and Staff orally.

The R & S pages don't have enough room to write directly in them. The markeboard and dry erase markers have been a big hit at our house. We do 2/3 of each lesson orally and/or on markerboard, and the rest he writes in his composition book. This has kept the writing to a minimum and has helped keep the lesson times shorter. Doing it this way has still kept his retention high - I'm very impressed with R & S for that reason, as well as many others. :D
