I have yet MORE question about HOD

Post by mom23dc » Sun Apr 12, 2009 8:27 am

Since I have definately decided on HOD Preparing for my 11 yo daughter, I have been thinking of question I still wanted to ask(I am a huge information seeker as you will see!!)

I went to look at the pictures from the convention, and noticed that all the books, except for CTC, are not spiral bound. Are the pages going to flip back and forth or does it lay flat?

In the samples, I did not see any reference to DITHOR. What week does that start, and what books in Preparing uses DITHOR? Will it reference to the any of the books in the Extension pack?

And, what about High School? Is Carrie planning on coming out with High School programs in the future??

Do any of you print off anything special from the computer, such as maps, clip art, pictures of famous people, etc??????????????? Is that needed??

And, do any of you know if HOD takes paypal? And there is no free shipping option? How long does the order take?

How long do I need to look over the material in order to be ready to start my school year?

Thank you!!

Lots of questions... Here's a few answers for you... :D

HOD uses a lay flat binding, you open the manual to the page you are on and press down on the center of the book to make it lay flat. The manuals hold up well.

The schedule for the extension books is in the appendix. We read some of the extension books from bigger, I just keep a tab on the page in the appendix so I can flip to it easily.

I don't know about Preparing, but in Bigger, there is a box on each page for Reading Choices (the choices are to either follow the emerging reader schedule or to use DITHOR.

Carrie currently has no plans for high school but is open to following the Lord's guidance in that area. So keep asking for it everyone!

the last I knew they did not accept Paypal, but that may have changed, I don't know for sure.

HAPPY EASTER.

That's great news, Cindy! :D We're almost done with PHFHG, and what a super year it has been - I can't wait for you to start. I agree with everything Lee Ann said already. My HOD manuals (I'm using 3) stay open laying flat for the duration of school each day - works great. I use sticky notes for things in the Appendix too - there aren't many. DITHOR is scheduled 3 of the 4 days each week in the Reading Choices box of the PHFHG plans, so just follow that schedule. You'll get through 5 DITHOR genres this way. You can choose the genres and books you want to do for them. The DITHOR book packs are wonderful and a good place to start making choices. Here's a link to some of them:
http://www.heartofdakota.com/drawn-into-optional4-5.php

The extension package books have daily scheduled readings in the Appendix of PHFHG. They are not linked to DITHOR.

I too am praying that God lays it on Carrie's heart to write high school, but she will for sure be writing 3 more guides after CTC to finish out the history cycle. She has also agreed to give recommendations for high school if she does not write more guides at that point.

I do not print off anything special for HOD. It's all there - believe me!!! :D

HOD does not take Paypal. There's not free shipping, unless you order from a book fair. There are a lot of savings when you order packages - more than there would be by having free shipping, so check that out. They are super fast at shipping - priority mail - 3 days about to your door. I looked over PHFHG for about 30 minutes the weekend before I began teaching it. Be sure to read the Introduction and pick up a few things from Walmart (or wherever) as needed. I got everything there except the common place book (just a special diary/journal type book with blank lines), which I could have gotten there but got one at a book fair instead. I took another 30 minutes to put the books needed in tubs for each child. Got an hour? You're good to go! Oh, maybe add another half-hour to hour to look over DITHOR if you've not used that before. You have GOT to order your books - once you see the PHFHG guide, you will see that this is going to be super-easy to do. Can't wait to hear about your box day!

My goodness, you have me SO excited, I just want to go ahead and order now, and order EVERYTHING(rather then use my library for most of it... LOL )

Okay, I think I am confused about DITHOR. I "thought" that the Extension pack readers were scheduled for DITHOR??? So, we are responsible for finding our own Genres/extra books for utilizing the DITHOR program? The books that come in the Preparing package do NOT get used in the DITHOR??

We are using DITHOR level 6/7/8, so the book suggestions are a little "young" for my daughter.

And I just noticed, what is Language Lessons for the Secondary child by Sandi Queen? Is this a must have to use with DITHOR level 6/7/8?

So would it be worth ordering the Book List? WIll this list include books for 6th/7th grade level books?

I am so glad you mentioned this!!!

Thank you!!

Cindy,
I will be new to Preparing in the fall, but I have all my stuff already and have spent some time just looking over it because I am excited. The recommended book list has plenty of choices for DITHOR level 6/7/8, it is definately worth the $5. DITHOR book choices are completely seperate from the extension pack.

Cindy - I'm so glad you are excited! :D :D :D The extension pack is not scheduled for DITHOR. Yes, you are responsible for gathering your books (about 5 of them) for DITHOR. The Sample Book Ideas list gives many ideas for books, and they are listed according to level (including your 6/7/8) and genre. You won't have any trouble finding good books using that list, and if you want to use your library, it should be easy because libraries typically have those books. You do not need Language Lessons... by Sandi Queen. All of those skills are covered in the HOD guide. (That book is only carried for families using just DITHOR in their homes, and then the Queen's book rounds out the rest of the LA.) You wouldn't want to do that book too because it would be doubling up on many skills. HTH! :D

I'm glad to help, Cindy, and keep asking questions whenever you have them, and I will too! That is exactly why this board was created, so I'm happy it's been of use to you. I am looking forward to you receiving your HOD materials. I know that will put it all together just right - it certainly has for me. :D

I placed two orders before I had everything I need for Bigger Hearts. Actually, I'm about to place a third  for a few little things. I love this company and think I'm addictd to ordering!

Anyways, I used pay pal both times and will for this next order, too. It's very easy to do. I used the new pay pal plug in feature. You get that through your pay pal account. It takes a few clicks and maybe two or three minutes. Pay Pal will set you up to place orders from vendors that don't accept pay pal. Each time you want to make such an order, you can get a debit/credit card number directly from pay pal. You will then use that number and the expiration date that they provide to make your purchases. You can elect to get a number that you use one time (that's what I do) or one that offers the opportunity for multiple purchases over a period of time. There is no charge for this pay pal service. It's free and very easy to set up.

The only negative is that then you can spend money anywhere!

You're kidding? I'd never heard of that. Paypal is so innovative, aren't they?!? Thanks for sharing this in case others would like to use Paypal in this way. Have fun with your Bigger Hearts stuff - I know what you mean about being addicted to ordering. I am getting very excited to get my CTC things too! :D
