Readers For Next Year?

Post by 3musketeers » Thu Apr 09, 2009 4:31 pm

Ladies,
I need some help choosing level 2/3 readers for my 7 yr old ds after he finishes emergent readers. I am planning to do Carrie's level 2 readers pack. Here is my question. I'm trying to decide if I should replace Amelia Earhart, Hannah, Pioneer Cat, and The Secret School with more "boyish" books. I have a feeling that Carrie added these to the pack because they are great readers for boys and girls alike.

I guess I need some assurance because this past year with SL my poor 9 yr old ds had to endure many "girly" books like Betsy and Tacy go up the Hill and B is for Betsy. (The year of the Betsys  ) Please don't get me wrong. These are great books. But when I told my older ds not to take his current reader on the Cub Scout campout because I was afraid he would get a ribbing for reading Betsy and Tacy or the like...it was too much :D .

I am so glad to be using DITHOR next year so I can pick and choose. Please let me know about your experiences with the level 2 book pack. My other option for Bio. and Hist. Fiction is some Clyde Robert Bulla books. I was thinking Henry Huggins for Realistic fiction.

I don't want to miss out on the listed pack books if my ds would enjoy them.

Thank you,
3musketeers

My dd is reading Level 2 this year and I honestly don't find them to be "girly". Amelia Earhart....FLIGHT! Pioneer Cat and Hannah...Days of the Wagon Trains and Pioneers! And my dd just told me The Secret School would be great for boys too :) They have girl characters, but awesome adventures and lessons and plots that boys and girls will both like. 2 of them look girly b/c of the picture of the girls on front, but I promise they are excellent choices for both.

Tamara,
Thank you so much for the reply. I really think I am going to take your advice and stick with the level 2 pack choices as is. I only hear terrific things about Carrie's choices from this board. Thank your daughter for her thoughts, as well. Like you, I often appreciate my boys opinions on these things.

Blessings,
Cindy

Cindy,

I have to admit that my "all boy" boys have enjoyed the books you mentioned from the Level 2 pack as well, however the great part of DITHR is that if you feel your little guy would rather have some different books you can easily put in some of the titles you mentioned. I do love Clyde Robert Bulla too, so you can't go wrong!

Blessings,
Carrie

This is one of the reasons I am so glad to have found your curriculum. Thank you for thinking of all the little details that will help homeschool moms. Structure yet just enough flexibility. Love the BALANCE!!!
