Can they work ahead in math if they want to?

Post by sharonb » Sat Apr 04, 2009 12:08 pm

Hi! I posted some questions in another thread but I have more, so here goes!

One thing that concerns me about switching to HOD is that everything is tied together. (At the same time, that is what I like about it, LOL!). This past year we've schooled year-round, and whenever one of the children finishes a subject, they just move on to the next level. So, my oldest is in 2nd grade math and 1st grade phonics/reading. My 5 year old has about 70 lessons left in 1st grade math but isn't even ready for 1st grade phonics yet. (We are getting singapore math to supplement our R&S though, so I could try to use that as scheduled if I do go with HOD).

When you use HOD, do you have to stick with a strict schedule for math and LA in order to get the most out of the curriculum? Or do you just ignore those parts of the lesson plans? Those of you who do that- does it bother you to ignore those subjects in the plans and just use the Bible/history/science portions? I think that I could probably follow HOD completely with my younger children who are still pre-K if I start it now and use the recommendations. But my older 2 are kind of all over the place with where they are, KWIM?

Hi,
The phonics/reading and math portions in HOD are completely separate from the rest of the program, so it is very easy to move along faster in those areas and not affect the flow of the rest of the program at all. That is one of the things I love about HOD that makes it different from many other "complete" programs.

one of mine worked well behind the recommendations for math, I never caught her up. And she is currently in school being mystified by Math.

Now the second one loved math so much she is done already with Kindergarden math, So I started her in the first grade books (They arrived just in time Carrie!) Now I do have to juggle the 2 books looking in bigger for our lesson plan for math but it's not that hard.

I also school year round because my first dd just looses information if it is not used continually. And #2 is behind in school due to switching countries. So I have to stop trying to make every thing fit nicely and just let it move along as well as it can..

This is only my first year, but if my daughter showed an aptitude beyond how it is written I would probably move her along and juggle two books. On the other hand if she was struggling in area I would slow her down for that and move on with everything else, I see the books as my guide not my master, KWIM.
