Bible Storybook Choices in Bigger Emergent Package

Post by Daisy » Tue Mar 31, 2009 2:44 pm

Wow, that was some title. LOL.

I don't have either of the Bible choices for the Emergent package with Bigger. My son is technically beyond the emergent pack but I really loved the idea of him reading a Bible storybook as a great kick off to the year.

So what do you think about substituting with Family-Time Bible from LHFHG? He loves that Bible story book. I don't know what the reading level is but he can easily read it.

I just hate to buy another Bible story book when he is already able to read his real Bible. On the other hand, I like the idea of a simple Bible survey type overview for the beginning of the school year.

What do you all think?

I'm new to HOD, so I'm not familiar with all the story Bibles that are used. But I will tell you what I did with my emerging reader in that situation a few years ago. We used Rod and Staff's Bible Stories to Read, and I was very pleased with it. It's 60 stories, with line drawing illustrations that aren't "babyish" like some story Bibles can seem to older kids. It was only $5-6.

Daisy - are you using the Emerging Reader's Set for him? The schedule (in Bigger's Appendix) has pacing and comprehension questions for the 2 Bibles in the set. That was a great way to build our dc's comprehension, and the questions were chosen carefully, following Bloom's Taxonomy (more carefully than I'd choose off the cuff). So, I guess what I am trying to say :D is if you are using the set and a goal is to build his comprehension, it is worthwhile to get 1 of the 2 Bibles suggested (The Beginner's Bible is the more difficult of the 2). But, if you are just trying to choose a Bible for him to read independently for his own special time - the Family Time Bible is wonderful! It is one of our favorites around here. :D
