Supplementing R&S math with Singapore?

Hi,

Where to begin...

I'm looking for some math advice.

I am using R&S 1st grade math with my 6 and 7 year old, and it's been a great year. My oldest just hated math, HATED IT, and then I found that the Mastery method of drill and kill works quite well for her. Her confidence is growing and she usually asks to do math as her first subject after HOD left side of the page. I am so happy that I found a program that is working for her/them.

I see the value of Singapore, and how it teaches "mathematical" thinking. However, I am afraid to completely "switch" math programs when one is working so well. I'm an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" kind of gal.

We'll be doing Beyond after we finish LHFHG. Would it be too much to supplement R&S with the Singapore?

I would appreciate your comments.

Aw peaches, I just wrote you a note and somehow it didn't go thru. But basically I was encouraging you that it's wonderful that you have found something that you like. HOD works with any math. I have gone through the struggle with math and have found it simplest to choose one program. When I try to double up, I usually find it's more out of fear that my child will be missing something, rather than faith that says "this is a good choice for us this year". You know, you can take it year by year, and if at some point Rod and Staff isn't working for you any more, you can make a change then. I say use it if it is working! But if you truly are wanting to supplement, I'm sure there are ways to do it, like using the word problems, or using it as a summer math curriculum. I hope this helps a little.

Hello - I use R&S 2 with Singapore with my 2nd grade daughter. I found she really likes Singapore and picks up on the new concepts quickly, BUT, I feel there is not enough drill. So, we do both. I let her work in Singapore til we hit a tough concept or something I feel is a bit advanced for her, then we work in R&S for awhile, to get the facts down. I like both programs for those reasons, and so far, she has not complained. She is halfway thru Singapore 2A right now and in Unit 3 of R&S. I have found some variety is helpful for both of us.

I am so stuck in the mindset of teaching a traditional math program. This is where my struggle comes in.

Patience, I hate it when messages go off into infinity like that -- lol! Thank you for taking the time for the second response. I'm not trying to be overly ambitious in attempting two math programs, but in reviewing the scope and sequence in R&S, there are things that will NEVER be covered. I have read several posts about Singapore over the weekend, and that has been quite helpful.

Brenm37, I'm encouraged that the combination of R&S and Singapore is working out for you and your daughter! In reviewing R&S 2nd grade math, I can see how the program could use a little variety.

I just need to pray and stop dwelling on this.

Hmmm, well any math works with HOD, and I do think that if math is working, that's a good thing to keep going. Doing 1 math program really is enough, whichever one you do - at these young ages doubling up isn't as overkill as it would be with the older ages, but nonetheless, it isn't necessary (on the flip side, if your child adores math, than why not? ).

If you are wanting to give Singapore a try with the thought of perhaps replacing your other math at some point, you could get just Singapore 1A (and your Beyond guide), and casually work through that this summer. We're doing Beyond/1A now and it's super fun to do - with the hands-on math activities written in Beyond for it, it would probably be a fun summer thing to do anyway. Then, you'd have a better idea if you wanted to continue with that the next school year, or just use your other math program.

We are going to supplement R&S with Singapore. My oldest just started R&S 2 and is doing fine. My 5 1/2 year old is well over halfway done with R&S 1 but I think he needs something like Singapore. Since he's ahead of where he needs to be for his age, we have plenty of time to give Singapore 1A a try for a while. If we end up liking Singapore we might make it our primary program and just use R&S for extra drill.
