Re: Anyone in Canada?
Well, we are not in Canada...yet, but we plan to move there in about 6 years when my husband can retire. We have a summer place that we plan to build on to and call it home. Hopefully we can obtain residency. Our dd's will still be school age (about 13 and 15 if we can move in 6 years) so we will be homeschooling in Ontario too. I would like to incorporate metric and Canadian history now but have not done so yet-we really have not done much history at all. We use Math-U-See which I think has a Canadian edition. What part of Ontario are you located? We will be about 2 hours from Timmins and 3 hours from North Bay (Northern Ontario)-pretty remote. How are the homeschool laws there? I would love to see some Canadian book suggestions for HOD!
We are just starting Bigger (as of yesterday so we are VERY new to HOD). I have done alot of jumping around but I can see us sticking with this one (and I do not say that every time we switch. LOL) . It is perfect for our oldest but our youngest is not too crazy about discussing but hopefully the activities will keep her engaged enough. She loved painting today which is something I rarely do.
I hope the snow starts melting and you see spring soon. Our friends send pictures of all the snow they have had this year. All I can say is WOW! We are in Ohio so it is quite a difference. Many things to learn about surviving in the "bush". I would love to hear about your plans and how things are in Ontario. If this is too OT you can PM me

Re: Anyone in Canada?
I'm in south western ON, about 6 hours south of North Bay. Our snow had melted and we even had a 17 (68) degree day that broke records. Yet today we awoke to a sprinkling of snow. But overall, we did get hit harder than previous years in snow and it started much earlier. I just moved back from NY state, but our weather there was much the same.
Homeschooling laws in ON are awesome! You can notify the school board of your intent to homeschool, if you want.
I'd love some Candain stuff for HOD! There really isn't much out there. Most HS cirric's are US. That's one of the things that drew me to Sonlight and away from MFW, but I give up! I'll just have to supplement and accpet that most stuff comes from the US. There is a lady that does a history and geography one at the convention here though. I may pick something up this year to supplement. As for currency, because I lived in the US I have both so I teach both. For metric, I also teach both, but have been lucky that saxon included it.
I'm hapy to talk more here or in a PM:)

Re: Anyone in Canada?
You have me doing some Canadian research now. LOL I looked quite a bit at history options and found some by Donna Ward which may be usable but possibly more than what I want to do. I would really like a history book like Eggleston's or some read alouds based on the famous people of Canada through history. When I looked at Donna Ward's index I did not recognize any of the names! I am not good about putting together reading lists (which is why I like HOD, and I can buy my books too). Have you ever looked at her material? I see she is on a convention schedule so I would guess that is who you were referring too.
I think we are okay on currency since it is similar in values except the looney and tooney (sp?) but the tooth fairy is Canadian at our house and we go to Bingo when we are there in the summer so they are exposed to it. I would like to include metric and I am not sure if MUS does in later levels, more research Math Mammoth has a metric unit so I may check that out if MUS is lacking. I know they sell in Canada but am not sure if there is a Canadian version or it teaches both and uses the same version. I think the research is the reason I like to homeschool.
If you, or anyone out there, has any suggestions for Canadian history to use with HOD I would love to hear about it

Hi Mumkins,
I had to write and say "hi".. dh and I were born and raised in Kitchener, ON, and lived there until five years ago when we moved to TN (and now we're in OK )
We're very glad to be living in a state whose hs'ing laws are as easy to deal with as Ontario's.
Enjoy your HOD journey!

Welcome Christianna!
Hi Leslie! My SIL Leslie was living in TN for a bit:) Enjoy the warm weather down there!
Yes, Donna Ward was who I was reffering to. If you want a couple basic things I'd google scholars choice. It's a teacher supply store. They ship to the US, or it may give you an idea for a couple books. We have a map one with basic geography from there.

Re: Anyone in Canada?
The homeschooling laws are incredible in Ontario-I wish I could move now and skip the standardized testing. Ohio requires testing or portfolio review which is not as bad as some states at least. I did find a few things to use that hopefully will work as read alouds without adding too much. Donna Ward's materials look good but I am waiting to see how the others that I found turn out. Here is a link to a blog from someone using SOTW and adding Canadian studies. There is a link within the blog entry for Ambleside online Canada which gives some good references (these are some of the ones I have ordered).

I also found a book called "Great Books to Study Canadian History" by Bonnie Landry (a homeschooler). I could not preview it but hopefully it has good resources that I will be able to find here in the States through the library or ILL.
http://www.bluemantle.ca/details.asp?id=19821&
I may still add Donna Ward's in a later time (unless Carrie finds some good resources for us ).
I am glad to see Canadians here too and welcome
Thanks for the resources Mumkins!

Re: Anyone in Canada?
This will probably not help but I'll through it out there anyhow...
It would be historical fiction.
I have a book suggestion for a read-aloud. Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. You've probably already thought of it, but incase you hadn't....I would love to see some Canadian book suggestions for HOD!

Re: Anyone in Canada?
I'm not living in Canada anymore but I'm originally from Quebec. I have cousins, aunt/uncle and sister (for now anyway) living in Ontario. I'm going to have my kids apply for their certificate of Canadian citizenship since I am still Canadian but also American living in Vermont.

Re: Anyone in Canada?
Doh! I never thought of Anne of Green Gables for historical ficton, lol.
SoaringEagle- I'm not sure if you can do that anymore. I know my grandpa has dual cause his Dad is an American. But when I was living in NY, PG with my last someone told me that if I gave birth in the US, I could get him Canadian citizenship, but he'd have to give up his US citizenship. We did go home to have him anyway cause MIL is my midwife. IDk, that's just what someone told me when I mentioned I'd been concidering having my son in the US for dual. Awesome for your kids if you still can!
Thanks for the links gestep!

Re: Anyone in Canada?
I frequent the CIC (Citizen and Immigration Canada) site alot due to travel and hopefully residency (although based on the updated lists I don't know if we will qualify ). According to CIC:
"Under Canadian law, a Canadian is allowed to be a citizen of another country as well. Some countries, however, will not let you keep their citizenship if you become a Canadian citizen. The consulate or embassy of your other country of citizenship can let you know if this applies to you."
According to US Immigration:
"Dual citizenship occurs automatically for some individuals. For example: a child is born in the United States to foreign parents. In this example this child has U.S. Dual Citizenship since the child is automatically a citizen of the United States and a citizen of its parent's home country. The same applies to children of U.S. citizens born abroad where the child is both a U.S. citizen and a citizen of the country of birth.
US Dual Citizenship: The U.S. government allows dual citizenship. United States law recognizes U.S. Dual Citizenship, but the U.S. government does not encourage it is as a matter of policy due to the problems that may arise from it."
So if you are Canadian and give birth in the US your children would have dual citizenship automatically. I am not sure about the paperwork aspect of it though.
BTW, as of June this year if traveling by car you must have a passport or passport card, birth certificate and driver's license are no longer accepted.
As for Anne of Green Gables, I saw it mentioned in one of my research rabbit trails and I wasn't sure what the connection is. Is it set in Canada and based on events in Canadian history or is it considered Canadian for some other reason?
Thanks!

Re: Anyone in Canada?
It takes place in late 1800's-early 1900's (it's actually a series of 6 books I think....like the Little House books) on Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. And it is a FABULOUS read for both children and adults alike!!! To this day it is absolutely one of my favorites (the movie version with Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst is excellent too! With the exception of the third in the trillogy of movies....the producer or director??? made his own story instead of following the books AT ALL! It is horrid!)As for Anne of Green Gables, I saw it mentioned in one of my research rabbit trails and I wasn't sure what the connection is. Re: Anyone in Canada?
Well, not in Canada, but I am Canadian. We've lived in the States for almost 10 years, but are originally from various locations around Southern Ontario, most recently Kitchener. I would love for my kids to know more about Canada and would like to study Canada more in the future.
Re: Anyone in Canada?
I just saw your message, so I am a little late in answering.
I am from Saskatchewan, and am just getting into HOD. I like what I see.
MUS does have a Canadian version. It does have more Canadian content (ie Metric), but still uses the imperial measurements somewhat. We use MUS for our children. It seems to be working well.
For Canadian history, most of what we have done is reading. I'm wondering if a person could add some into HOD... but am not sure how.
If you have any specific questions, I'd be glad to share what I have found.
Carol
Hopefully for the fall CTC, LHFHG (left side), BLHFHG (right side) and LHTH (right side) [is this doable?]
