Looking for Viking movies to go along with Preparing
Looking for Viking movies to go along with Preparing
My son is really enjoying Raiders from the Sea & Leif the Lucky in Preparing. I've been trying to think of some Viking-type movies that we could watch just for fun. Any ideas?

Re: Looking for Viking movies to go along with Preparing
Great question!
I just did a quick search at Netflix http://www.netflix.com/Search?lnkce=iws ... acsNoEnhRt, and it looks like there are a couple Viking documentaries put out by Nova and another that was shown in Imax theaters. Naturally, you'd want to preview to see how much violence is portrayed and how they handle the Viking conversions to Christianity.
Has he read "Beorn the Proud" by Madeleine Polland, published by Bethlehem Books?
Or their book "The Story of Rolf and the Viking Bow" by Allen French?

Hi Janet,
I have a book called "Learning with the Movies" by Beth Holland (copyright 2003, ISBN 0975392239) http://www.learningwiththemovies.com/. She has two movies listed under the Vikings section.
One is "The Vikings" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052365/ It is filmed on location in Normandy and Brittany. She recommends that the parents watch first because their barbaric society is definitely portrayed, but it is not as graphic as today's version would be, however; it does show topics of which certain parents may not approve. It also accurately shows the Viking way of life.
the second movie listed is:
"The Long Ships" (1964).http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057259/ She doesn't recommend due to finding the movie to be very violent and gory with no real redeeming values for the watching.
We are currently on the Viking section also (and loving Raiders from the Sea, I am going to have to get the rest of the series) so I am glad you brought this up.

We were able to get the IMAX movie from the library - Vikings Journey to New Worlds. If you get a chance, it's a great movie to watch after reading Leif the Lucky. Part of the movie is told from Leif's point of view.
