Resources for teaching Health

I read in a previous post that HOD covers everything except Health. What do you ladies use to cover that subject at your house?

I have found lots of great 'health' books at our library. Any books on things like smoking and cigrettes, eating healthfully, hand washing, taking care of your teeth, hair, skin, etc. There are also lots of free resources on the internet...just do a search online to find many things.

I used Rod and Staff for second grade. It was adequate, but nothing special. Some parts were definitely classroom oriented and not applicable.

Friends that have used Horizons said they wouldn't do it again.

I'm contemplating Rod & Staff's fourth grade. It's relatively inexpensive, seems to cover some basics... body systems for one, I can't remember off hand what else.

I haven't used it yet but purchased Prudence and The Millers along with Prudence and Your Health workbook. I got it from Timberdoodle.

I have used R&S 2, as an above poster said it is adaquate. For 3rd grade with my oldest I used Abeka Health Safety & Manners 3 and thought it was very thorough. Again for 4th Grade used Abeka, but didn't like it as much as the 3rd grade level (which at once a week could be spread over 2 years). I have their 6th grade book which also covers drug & alcohol addictions so am keeping that one for when we reach there. But really you don't need a set curriculum. This year I got Home Economics for Homeschoolers level 1, it's a cute curriculum and covers nutrition, but I felt it was better for a younger grade leve (1st or 2nd, unless your child has no experience in the kitchen) They do have older grades.....okay am losing focus here. Hopefully this will give you a few ideas....

I am looking for something a lot simplier than what I tried this year... which was Horizons. I wasn't pleased with it at all. Rainbow Resource has a simple health program put out by Weekly Reader. Don't know that much about it, other than I used to read weekly readers when I was young, and the price is unbeatable... around $5.

I bought Abeka Health Safety and Manners 1 and 2, and they look pretty good. I basically wanted something easy and inexpensive...I got great deals on used older editions on e-bay.

Prudence and the Millers! We LOVE this book as it ties health and hygene to Biblical principals and scriptures and is very much story-book style.

I'm glad someone brought this up. I purchased Horizons Health 3 and 4. But, I haven't even looked through it. I had intended to use it next year during our day 5 "free day" to cover Health for my 2 oldest kids. But, maybe I should reconsider. I'll be looking forward to more opinions on this topic!
