What's after Bigger Hearts dictation/spelling?

Post by allforjesus » Tue Feb 17, 2009 3:44 pm

My son can do the dictation and spelling lists in the appendix of Bigger Hearts. What do I do next for spelling? I heard there is a new dictation list in Preparing next year. Or is there something I could do before I buy that in 8 months?

If I were you, I'd go ahead and buy the Preparing manual now and start with the dication in there. If that's not financially doable, I'm not sure what I'd recommend. Some of the other ladies will probably have suggestions.

I do like Rod & Staff spelling (which is $15) for the teacher and student books, so that would be a cheaper option for the time being.

Hi Sue Ann! The next level of dictation is included in PHFHG. I think you would find it difficult enough - we have! It begins where the Bigger list left off, but then quickly gets harder.

I'm not sure if I'm correctly understanding your question, but I did want to clarify that the Preparing Hearts guide which contains dictation passages for Level 2, 3, and 4 is currently available. The Level 3 passages would be the set that comes after the passages in Bigger Hearts. You can purchase the Preparing Hearts guide for dictation now if you desire, otherwise you can do your own form of studied dictation for the duration of the year. :D

Here's a nutshell version of how to do CM-style studied dictation:
At our house, we use the Charlotte-Mason style studied dictation for spelling. You can choose several sentences from the literature your kiddo is reading reading. Allow him to study it. Then, you dictate the sentences a phrase at a time, without repeating them. He would write them, and then check it himself against the passage in the book for mistakes (marking any mistakes) and immediately fixing them on his paper. If the sentences are perfect, he gets a new passage the next day. If not, the same passage is dictated the next day, until it is perfect. You can slowly work up to dictating a paragraph (or more) at a time in this manner over the years as you move into middle/high school.

Blessings,
Carrie
