Spelling in Beyond

Post by deltagal » Tue Feb 03, 2009 5:13 pm

HI there,

I'm working with my 7 yo using the Grade 1 list of spelling words in Beyond. He does not easily master all the words each week. Should I go ahead and roll him into the next list the next week or have him continue to work on mastery of the old list? :D

Good question...I haven't seen this one answered before. I guess my answer would depend on what you mean by 'mastered'. If you want him to get every one correct, and he's not, then I guess you could work on them another week. For my dd we moved on to the next week's list because she would ony miss one or two. I did have her write the word(s) she missed 3 times on the back of her spelling paper, though that was not an HOD recommendation. I'm sure Carrie will come along and answer soon. HTH :o

It is usually no more than 3 words that he doesn't have mastered.

Maybe you could take the ones he misses and either add them to the next week's list, though that does mean more words. Or you could take the 3 he misses and spend an extra couple of days with those to improve his spelling of them.

Florence,

I'd go forward with the new list each week, but I'd pull out the index cards of the missed words from the previous week, and have those words be practiced only on the hands-on day (when the child writes missed words in multi-colors, or says the missed words while bouncing, etc.). If a child misses more than half of the words in one week, I'd repeat the whole list the following week.

Blessings,
Carrie

Great! This helps a great deal. I felt like we should be moving forward, but at the same time I was uncertain what to do about those words that are not firm. Thanks for your input. :D
