Post by Sharon » Mon Jan 26, 2009 7:13 am

I am putting my order together for Preparing and having a VERY sensitive child I wondered about the actual details concerning the Holocaust in these books. Looking for imput from those who have read them before I order!!

Thank you so much!

Sharon,

I know what you mean about the Holocaust and other tough topics. I do think that both Journey to America and Twenty and Ten cover that particular topic in the best way possible. Neither one goes into the horrors of the concentration camps, but both books do follow kiddos to a place where food is scarce, the Nazis are around, and times are very tough.

Twenty and Ten is the less descriptive of the two books and is suitable even for sensitive readers. I would recommend at least one of the two books for getting a feel for that period in history. Both books eventually have happy endings and are true stories.

Blessings,
Carrie

We read Twenty and Ten, and my ds liked it so much he took it to his room to read it again at night. I did not know he was going to read it to my younger ds (5 yo) though, who is my more sensitive child. But, the 5 yo loved it too! He was not bothered by it at all, and it was even read to him at night. They have book time then - but usually they do it separately. I may need to check on that a bit more, hmmmm? But anyway, that book for sure (and also Journey to America) was/were not what I'd consider a scary way to talk about the Holocaust.
