storytime with children of different ages

Post by deltagal » Sun Jan 18, 2009 11:49 am

HI all,

As is frequently recommended, we're using the Storytime schedule from only one of the curriculums, although all my children are in a different curriculum. In fact, we're using the Storytime schedule from Beyond with my 7,9 and 11 yo. They ALL love the books and look forward to the books. My question, however, is should they each be doing the Storytime "activities" as scheduled in their guide or should I just go with the "activities" from the block in Beyond for all of the children? :?:

I look forward to your input. :D

I vote for the option that makes less work for mom!
I like keeping my boys as together as possible with the activities they share. So I would pick one activity (maybe one of your other guides has an activity that would work better then the one in Beyond!) and do that for everyone. :-)

I have a 5 year old who REALLY needs a great deal of pictures still for comprehension of stories. My 6 year old enjoys chapter books much more, but she also enjoys picture books. Though it could be seen as more work, I try to (3 times a week) have individual reading time with each one so that I can focus on individual needs.

Otherwise, I feel that one of my kids is missing out on some of the education and conversation that naturally flow from read alouds on their level.

I already have math & phonics with them individually as well, so I feel blessed to get that one on one time with them that I might not otherwise make room for.

I should also mention that I don't always get through a day of HOD on the day it is to be done. We may take 2 days to get through a day of lessons. But, I am cool with that :D

Florence,

I've actually done both of the options suggested by the ladies in this thread. With my younger guy in LHFHG, I read the Thornton Burgess books aloud to him separately, as he needs the shorter style chapters and pictures (like Shannon mentioned). However, at lunch in the past, I have read one book aloud to all of my boys, and then we've done the corresponding activities in the guide all together. :D

You may want to only do the Storytime activities from Beyond for this year with your read-alouds, saving the ones from Bigger Hearts to do with your Storytime read-alouds next year. Just a thought. 8)

Blessings,
Carrie

Yes, I like that thought. And that is what we shall do!

Thanks bunch. :D
