Now I'm confused!

Post by thehergatts » Mon Jan 12, 2009 1:22 pm

Ok, the plan was to do LHTH with my 4.5 year old right now. Then I was going to do LHFHG in the fall with him and LHTH with my 3 year old DS.

Here is the problem . . . my 3 year old ds is currently joining us for LHTH and is able to do and understand everything that we are doing. I think he will be REALLY bored if I do it again with him in the fall. So, what do I do with him? He is a very quick learner. I want him to have fun, but I have no clue what to do with him. Any ideas?

Seems to me LHTH is the easiest to repeat. I'd just do phonics instruction in the place of learning letters and letter sounds and get him a simple math workbook to develop those skills. For arts and crafts, math and other ideas, there is a suggestion for older and younger students. Have him do the younger student suggestion (even if it is different from brother's) now and then have him do the older student suggestion next year so it is a little more involved. Just some ideas.

It sounds to me like they do well together so I would just keep them together as long as your little one is doing well. :D Next year I would maybe just run LHFHG at a slower pace next year and read some of the appendix books for the older ones if needed. This is what we are doing and it is working great. I started with an almost 4 year old and an almost 6 year old. I just ran it slower and focused more on phonics with the older one and math. We had a Summer in between there and we will finish it this year with them being 5 and 7. Form this point on I feel like it will be free sailing for combining them. I am really glad I went this way. So my advice is for a quick moving child like you have just combine them and move at the younger child's pace but supplement with phonics, math and extra books of necessary for the oldest. And for a little while just be willing to play it a little by ear. This has worked really well for us.

Hope this makes sense and helps a bit. :D

water2wine - thanks for that! I was seriously considering doing that, but wondered if I might be completely nuts to try LHFHG with my 3 year old. I guess maybe it will work! I am completely willing to play it by ear. As a matter of fact, I don't have to notify this fall because my older one will only be 5. I could go slow if I need to and do more next year.

Thanks for the replies!

Kristi I may have misunderstood the ages. I thought you had a three year old now that would be doing LHTH this year and LHFHG this next year. I started I think when my youngest was closer to four about 3 3/4. Just wanted to clarify that. But not saying it won't work for ya. I'm confused on the age thing as to how old you are saying they will be when you wanted to do LHFHG. So I thought I would just clarify for you what age I was talking about when we started. We will probably be at about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 years with LHFHG because we went slow and did a lot from the appendix to just get them at that perfect spot where they can now stay together for the long haul. LHFHG is a great program with lots of extra's in the appendix. It is an absolutely perfect one to stretch out.

OK just wanted to clarify all that to make sure I was giving you good information. :D

Thanks for the clarification!

Ian will be 3.5 when we start LHFHG and Sammy will be 5. I think that may just work! I didn't know if Ian would be WAY too young or not, but I think I am going to order LHFHG soon so I can look through it and decide.

Thanks again!!!

I would keep them together, too! I do that with my boys. :-)

Kristy that sounds like it will work since your little one sounds a little advanced. I would certainly try. I would just run it at the younger child's pace and fill in with the appendix material as needed with the older child. I think it would work and if the younger child is over loaded at half pace then you know it is probably not a good fit no harm done. When I did half pace I added phonics every day for both and sometimes math but just for the older child. HTH. Let us know how it goes. :D

This is what I plan on doing with my girls as well in 2010. My oldest will be 5 and my middle dd will be 3.5 almost 4, so I'm hoping to do LHFHG with the both of them together. Let me know how it goes for you! :D

Thanks everyone. I think that will be the plan! I'll keep you all posted in the fall about how it is going. Of course, if anything changes with preschool between now and then I am willing to be flexible.
