LHTH for Kindergarten?

Post by LeAnna » Sat Jan 03, 2009 11:39 am

Okay, I am pondering again about HOD! As it looks right now, both my girls will be going through each program and end up finishing in 7th grade. Soooooo, I am wondering about starting LHTH with my son when he is 5 and that way he will finish in 8th grade. Do you think LHTH will be too easy for him when he turns 5? I guess I could add reading in if he's ready. What do you all think?

Thanks,
LeAnna :D

We are doing LHTH slowly (due to various circumstances) with my ds 5 and he loves it! It's not too easy for him...but I guess that would depend on you dc specific abilities. We have added the K math and handwriting...so when we do LHFHG next year we will use the 1st grade resources for math and LA. We will also be adding RME for phonics beginning next week. We are treating this as his K year and plan to move on into 1st grade work next year, as long as he is ready. He has really enjoyed the finger plays, art activities, bible readings etc. in LHTH. I think it's great for a 5 yo. :o

I'm so glad you asked this question LeAnna because I was wondering the same thing. My son will be 5 on Aug 29, so he'd be a very young 5 next fall and if we were doing public school I wouldn't start him in K anyways. He was a preemie and is small for his age (birthday supposed to be November). But with homeschooling, I can go ahead and call next year his K year with LHTH and work him through the books to finish in 8th grade as his sister will. I am going to call the rest of this year his "preschool" year by using various resources, maybe Explode the Code, and fun activities. He's 4 1/2 and doesn't know all of his letters or sounds, and not all his numbers either, so I think LHTH will be just right coming up this fall. That's a lot of what they taught my dd in K anyways. Good to hear too, inHistiming, that it's working out well for you!

Carrie, if you have a chance, I would love to hear your opinion of doing this as a Kindergarten program. :D

LeAnna,

Sorry I've taken a bit to get to your post! :D We've just gotten all the book packages for the new book off to our website designer, so my time on the board has been cut lately.

I view LHTH as a kindergarten readiness program. If you add phonics, handwriting, K math, and reading out loud of good books, it could be a kindergarten program. The best way to determine which program your little one should use is by using the placement chart linked here: http://www.heartofdakota.com/placing-your-child.php

If your child clearly places in LHFHG, then I wouldn't drop back to LHTH. However, if your child clearly places in LHTH, then even if your child is 5, I would use LHTH. Does that make sense? :)

If your child is already doing phonics, handwriting, and math, then it is pretty likely that your child would also be ready for LHFHG even at half-speed. However, if your little one has never covered all of the "readiness type skills" that a kindergartner should have prior to kindergarten, then LHTH would be the better fit. With those who are just turning 5 it is always a judgment call by the parent as to what is best program-wise.

If you get a chance to pop back in, I''d love to hear more of your thoughts after you look over the placement chart. :D

dale1088,

From what you've shared about your 5 year old, I'd agree that he would fit best in LHTH. It will firm up his basic skills heading into Kindergarten (i.e. letters, letter sounds, numbers, etc.). 8)

Blessings,
Carrie

I'm going to be doing pretty much what inHistiming is doing with her kiddo. My son will be 5, but developmentally he's not quite that age. He'll be using LHTH with a few of the materials from LHFHG.

Well, we were thinking of holding him back for K until he's 6 anyway.... so to speak. So, he will be just turning 5 when I thought I would do the LHTH and see about throwing in some of the K materials. Not sure yet, though. It's still kind of early, but as of right now, LHFHG looks a little bit tough for him. I think boys are quite a bit different than girls!

LeAnna,

I agree that if LHFHG looks tough, then LHTH would be a better fit. It is always better to err on the side of being cautious, especially with boys or girls who are pretty wiggly (as I know several of my boys have been). So, I would go with your personal feeling on this one and plan to do LHTH (but I'd leave the option that you mentioned of re-evaluating as it gets closer, because those little ones can change so much in a few months)! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
