Carrie-Replacements for books already read in Preparing

Post by inHistiming » Mon Dec 15, 2008 7:58 am

I am looking over the Preparing...package, in preparation for next year. I know, it's early, but I always start looking this time of year! Our family already read The Bronze Bow, Adam of the Road, Door in the Wall, and Pedro's Journal during the 2007-2008 school year. I am wondering if there are any suggestions for good books to substitute for these? All of these selections are either in the extension pack, deluxe pack, or basic package....so I know I can easily replace the ones in the deluxe or extension packs, but would prefer a personal recommendation from you, Carrie, if you have one from the same period. Anyone else is welcome to chime in, too! I'm not so sure about what to do with Door in the Wall, since it is listed in the basic package. Any ideas?

I have been thinking about this, too, as there are a few books coming up in Preparing which we have already read. I have decided to go ahead and have ds re-read them when the time comes. For one thing, most of the books were ones that I read aloud to dc, and I think ds will get more out of them reading them for himself, and also, my dc do not seem to mind re-reading books at all. In fact, ds loves the Peggy Parish mystery books so much, he has read the entire series about 3-4 times each! He has a habit of gobbling up books quickly, so I think he picks up new things with each reading. I also think that having read a book in the past for pleasure, or having heard a book read aloud previously, may really help to build confidence in dc as they read it for themselves the second-time through more slowly. Since they are more familiar with the book, the narrations and projects may be a bit easier for them. Just some thoughts...

Thanks marypoppins....it had actually occurred to me at one point that he could do that. It will have been 2 years since we read them, so he will have forgotten some details by then. And The Bronze Bow was such a great book...I'd love to read that one again myself! :) I'll keep thinking about it...maybe it would be a good idea to just do it 'as is', even the ones previously read, and see how it goes. Anyone else have suggestions or comments?

Some books that come to mind you could add

Titus A Comrade of the Cross
Within The Palace Gates
Adam and His Kin (watch out there it does get pretty graphic towards the end)
The Vinegar Boy

I can't think of another book like Pedro's journal or one that just covers Columbus especially one that covers it that way. But what about a writing assignment of letting them pick any person in history they want and writing it as an if they were actually there or part of the History. They could use Pedro's journal as a guide. That is my only thought. It might not be a good one but just putting it out there.

Hope this helps! :D

inHisTiming,

I've been thinking about possible replacements since yesterday and am struggling to come up with any that I like as well as those we included in the packages already. My recommendation would be for those that your kiddos will read on their own (within the Extension Package or within the Deluxe Package) I would have the kiddos just reread. As marypoppins pointed out, it will be different for them to read it themselves as compared to when you read it aloud to them.

water2wine also gave you some great book suggestions, although I'll just mention that you won't want to do Within the Palace Gates, as we're scheduling that within the Extension Pack of our new ancients guide. :D So, you'll want to save that one.

Of the titles you listed, Door in the Wall is the only one that is scheduled as a read-aloud for Preaparing. I can definitely see where you wouldn't want to read aloud the same book you've just read aloud 2 years ago so that is the one I would work on replacing for sure. There are many wonderful books set in the medieval time period. However, I haven't read many of them for quite some time and also am not sure which ones we'll be using in our future HOD guide for medieval times. :D

3 very different suggestions for this time period that I do recall well would be Castle by David Macauley (a more factual look at the design of castles and life within a castle), Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest by Ann McGovern (my favorite of the Robin Hood retellings as it gives a great flavor for the period-- it is just recently out of print but still available used on Amazon or at your library), The Great and Terrible Quest (bloody at the end but not graphically -a wonderful story).

Happy reading!
Carrie

Thanks, Carrie. I think I will just have ds read the others that are scheduled in the extension pack...I'm sure it will be a different experience for him than it was when I read them aloud. And my dd was only in 2nd grade then, so any she reads will certainly be 'new' to her. I've also written down your suggested titles, along with those w2w suggested, and I will be looking those over to decide which I want to use...the Robinhood one sounds especially interesting right now, but we'll see. Thanks again for all the thought you put into this, and into all that you do! :)

Hahaha! I need to give you a list of what is in on my shelves. I should just assume if it is good you are using it.
