Rod & Staff English w/ BLHFHG?

Post by AboveRubiesMama » Sun Nov 23, 2008 5:31 pm

DD is going to be using the BLHFHG next year. She'll be in 2nd grade.

I was looking ahead and noticed that Rod and Staff will be used with the Bigger manual. She's currently using CLE's Language Arts (first grade) and is finally getting a hang of things.

If we think she's ready, is it possible to use R&S English 2 w/ BLHFHG? Are there directions for this in an Appendix? Or would I also need to buy the Bigger Manual?

Hello,
I'm using Beyond this year and the R&S English 2 lesson plans are not included in this book (appendix).
They are in the Bigger manual.

In Beyond, we do a grammar lesson each Day 5 of the Unit. We are in Unit 12 and so far we've covered different types of sentences and punctuating those sentences correctly. We've also touched on verbs (showing action) and I believe that is about it so far. This has been perfect for my 7yo ds though. Next year in grade 3 we'll begin R&S English 2.

I hope this was helpful to you!

R&S English is quite advanced. Long term goal w/HOD is to finish R&S 6 by 8th grade. So it wouldn't hurt one bit to wait til 3rd grade/Bigger to start R&S 2. Carrie and the CM way have recommended taking a break for a more gently LA year after a more rigorous year of it as well. We did R&S 2 last year (pre-HOD conversion  ) and are now following the LA/grammar lessons in Beyond as scheduled. It's amazing how much she is learning from this new approach with the copy work, narration, etc...the grammar lesson on day 5 is a nice review without seeming repetitive and she is going to be well prepared next year for R&S and the LA in Bigger. I know how it is to feel like we should jump right into something if we feel our child is ready for it...but in the long run, we just run into problems if we rush....IMHO.
